Toronto Blue Jays probable pitchers & starting lineups vs. Tampa Bay Rays, September 21
With just a handful of games left in the 2024 season, the Toronto Blue Jays have the car in neutral and are coasting towards the finish line. With a three-game deficit looming between them and their current opponent, the Tampa Bay Rays, in the divisional standings, there's an increasingly likely chance these Jays will finish in last this season. There've been steady improvements (primarily in the run differential department and from individuals such as Davis Schneider, Addison Barger, Jose Berrios and Bowden Francis) but it's fair to say that this season has been a lost one in Toronto.
Probable starting pitchers
- The Blue Jays are set to send rookie Yariel Rodriguez to the mound to make his 20th start of the season. The right-hander has shown glimpses of promise this year, and his 4.29 ERA and 4.33 FIP don't exactly point to a superstar-caliber hurler, but they're respectable nonetheless. In his last three starts, the 27-year-old has allowed a combined two earned runs in 12.1 innings with four walks and 11 strikeouts.
- At one point this year, it seemed that Taj Bradley, the Rays' starter in this evening's contest, was set to be their next big homegrown ace. The 23-year-old had a smooth 1.45 ERA in five July starts, striking out 31 and walking just eight in 31 innings. Since then, he's posted a 10.41 ERA in August and has a 4.67 ERA through three September outings. Even though his numbers have regressed, the former fifth-round pick is still full of potential and should anchor this rotation for years to come.
