Getting Davis Schneider 'back' will be huge for Blue Jays' offense this year and next

It's fair to say that Davis Schneider's had a whirlwind season. However, last week was huge. He hit .400 including a pair of homers off high fastballs during the weekend series sweep of the Cardinals with seven RBI, alongside a 1.505 OPS. Alarmingly, his home run on Sunday was only his second since June 22 against the Guardians.

There were plenty of expectations for Schneider heading into the season. He made the Opening Day roster after a strong showing in spring training with a pair of home runs and a .250 average. He started off the season well in the first two months with six home runs and he was rewarded with everyday playing time shifting between second base and left field.

Unfortunately since June, his offensive production has cratered. Schneider's batting average dropped below .200 in August, which was easily the worst month of his young career. Therefore, his playing time was cut back in favour of Will Wagner.

Wagner made a very good impression on the organization particularly in his debut series against the Angels as well as locking down the everyday second baseman position. Yet, the Blue Jays chose to stick by Schneider through his struggles, largely due to their record and it looks as though for the time being the patience is paying off for both parties.

After Saturday's game Schneider stated: "I'm still working hard in the cages and with our coaches but that never changes I've just been seeing the ball a little bit better lately." Credit has to be given to Schneider for working hard behind the scenes hitting off a tee and in the weight room. According to Chris Bassitt 'he shows up early, gets his work in and is constantly in a good mood.'

Despite a small sample size in eight games during the month of September, Schneider's hitting .269 alongside a .296 OBP and .615 SLG, the best month of his season so far. With two weeks left, the Blue Jays will need the version of Schneider who was instrumental earlier in the season back especially with roster spots in his positions up for grabs in 2025. Hopefully this past weekend's series has given him the confidence to do that.
