The Blue Jays offense needs to be better

The Blue Jays' offense has not been good enough to start this season.

Over the weekend, the Jays' offense wasted three solid starts from their pitchers in a sweep at the hands of the New York Mets.

In those three games, the Jays managed to only score three runs, which is pathetic to say the least.

While the Jays were able to put up six runs in back-to-back game against the Red Sox on Monday and Tuesday, they're going to need to be more consistent if they want to compete in the stacked American League East.

So far, the Jays offensive ranks as a team are not horrible, but must be improved. They are currently tied for 17th in runs per game (3.9). Surprisingly, they are seventh in batting average (.264) and seventh in-on base percentage (.346). However, they are tied for 27th in home runs (six), and tied for 25th in stolen bases (five).

Clearly, the Jays have been able to get players on base, but haven't been able to get them home.

It's the Jays should be hitting more home runs since their lineup is built around sluggers like Anthony Santander and Vladimir Guerrero Jr. at the top of the order. The Blue Jays will always be compared to the other teams in their division, and their offensive struggles look even worse in comparison to the New York Yankees.

The Yankees currently lead the league in runs per game (7.09), are third in batting average (.271) and are tenth in stolen bases (11). They also are second in baseball in home runs (25).

Being top-ten in those key offensive categories is a recipe for success, and the Jays need to find a way to get there. A good start would be for Santander and Guerrero to record their first home runs of the year. While the Blue Jays have gotten some good starts from unheralded contributors, this offense is only going to go as far as Guerrero and Santander take it.

One way the Blue Jays can turn around their offense is by being active at the trade deadline. There should be no shortage of impact bats available, and the team should do everything it can to build around Guerrero now that he's a Blue Jay for life.

This offense has talent, but they'll need to start scoring some runs in bunches soon.
