It's game day - the biggest game day of them all. Game 7 of the World Series - the first time ever that it is being played in Canada and the first time ever the Toronto Blue Jays will be participating. A championship Game 7 doesn't come around very often, with only 40 of them being played in 120 years of World Series play.

It will also be the first Game 7 played in the city of Toronto that decides a sports championship since the 1964 Stanley Cup finals - a game the Maple Leafs won 4-0 over the Red Wings. So while the Blue Jays has a franchise has never been here, and the city of Toronto hasn't been here in a very long time, there are two guys on the roster who know all about coming through in World Series Game 7's, and they will both be starting tonight for the Blue Jays.

Why Springer and Scherzer will be relied upon for their World Series Game 7 experience

George Springer and Max Scherzer have been on this stage before. The two veterans already have World Series rings in their trophy case and both have come courtesy of Game 7 wins. Ironically, they both played in the last time there was a World Series Game 7, when Scherzer's Washington Nationals defeated Springer's Houston Astros.

For Scherzer it was his second start of that years World Series. He got the ball in Game 1 against Houston and went five innings, giving up just two runs on five hits and three walks, while striking out seven batters. That was a game the Nationals won 5-4 in Houston and set the stage for Scherzer's next start in Game 7, also in Houston.

Scherzer's line in that game looked almost identical. five innings pitched with two runs allowed on seven hits and four walks - although he was only able to record three strikeouts. But it was enough of a good start that he gave his team an opportunity to strike offensively and get the Nationals their first championship in franchise history.

Now in 2025, Scherzer is once again making his second start of the series. In Game 3 against the LA Dodgers, Scherzer got into the fifth inning, and was responsible for three earned runs on five hits with three strike outs in 4.1 innings pitched. A respectable line for a 41-year-old who was originally left off the playoff roster during the ALDS. In Game 7, the Blue Jays would be more than happy with a pitching line like that if they can get it out of a player who could be making his final MLB appearance.

Meanwhile, Springer will be looking to recreate some of his postseason heroics from years past. While he went 0-for-4 in that 2019 game against Scherzer and the Nationals, he had a big game against the Dodgers in the previous Game 7, which was played in LA in 2017. Springer went 2-for-5 in that game, including a leadoff double against Yu Darvish and a two run home run an inning later that put Houston up 3-0 and knocked Darvish out of the game.

Those credentials also helped Springer win that years World Series MVP award as the Astros took down the Dodgers for their first World Series championship in franchise history. Springer has also already come through in one Game 7 in this postseason, hitting a three-run home run in the bottom of the seventh in the ALCS.

The rest of the Blue Jays have never been this far into a postseason or this close to winning a World Series and they will be looking to Springer and Scherzer, two veterans who have been there before, to lead them to championship glory.
