The Toronto Blue Jays entered the 2026 MLB season as one of the top defensive teams in the entire league. With a roster filled of former Gold Glove winners and finalists, including Daulton Varsho, Andrés Giménez, Ernie Clement, Vladimir Guerrero Jr., Myles Straw and Alejandro Kirk, it’s no wonder why opposing hitters don’t want to face the defensively-dominant squad.

Well, having strong defense is one thing, but being able to supplement that with elite defensive awareness just pushes things into the next level for the Blue Jays. The Colorado Rockies were the victim of such a play in their game against Toronto this past Tuesday (Mar. 31).

Blue Jays show off their elite defensive skills in a key play against the Rockies

With the Blue Jays up 2-1 late in the seventh inning with Colorado having TJ Rumfield as the potential tying run at second base, Toronto pulled off a massively perfect pickoff play. With an 0-1 count to Rockies third baseman Kyle Karros, Blue Jays reliever Braydon Fisher spun around quickly to fire the ball to second baseman Ernie Clement, who snuck in behind Rumfield to nab the speedster and end the threat.

Not only did it diffuse the Colorado rally, the spectacular play sparked the Blue Jays ballclub to add on three more insurance runs in the bottom half of the same inning to put the game out of reach as Toronto would go on to win 5-1 over the Rockies.

With the added ability to suddenly erase potential runs before they even have a chance to happen, it could become a key game-changer for the Blue Jays this year. Toronto has already bolstered their defense this offseason when Giménez was promoted to become the Blue Jays’ starting shortstop for the 2026 season following the departure of the more defensively-inept Bo Bichette in free agency.

On top of that, they had upgraded their offense and pitching with key acquisitions this past offseason with Kazuma Okamoto, Jesús Sánchez, Dylan Cease, Cody Ponce and Tyler Rogers. So to tack on another element to the game that could give the Blue Jays a huge advantage over the course of the season which makes them that much harder to play against.

In doing so, Toronto would not only solidify their contender status this season, but it should make them even more favourites to return and win the World Series to defy the insulting odds that Fangraphs had given them to accomplish the feat prior to the start of 2026.
