It was a tough opening weekend in Queens for Bo Bichette. The former Toronto Blue Jays star shortstop was feeling the heat from his new fans. On Sunday afternoon (Mar. 29) Bichette struck out on three pitches to end the bottom of the seventh with runners in scoring position in a 2-2 tie. He was immediately booed by the crowd, who watched their home team fall 4-3 to the Pittsburgh Pirates in extra innings.
It's just the third game of the season but Bichette, who signed a mega contract in the offseason, is already drawing the ire from a frustrated Mets fan base. Something he rarely experienced during his time in Toronto, with the Blue Jays.
A tough start for former Blue Jay Bo Bichette in his New York Mets weekend debut
Bichette took the criticism in stride. He was asked after the game about the jeers raining down from Citi Field and he said told reporters, "If anything, I thought it took too long. I get it. I thought my at-bats were terrible, too." Bichette went 0-for-5 in the game with three strikeouts, and has just one hit through his first 14 at-bats with the Mets. He added that he may have been pressing too much, trying to make something big happen. He said, "I definitely felt that, wanting to have a moment. Not only for my teammates, but for the fans and everything. So, that's something I have to manage."

It's certainly a stark change from what Bichette experienced in Toronto. He also told reporters, “In Toronto, I was booed by random fans here and there." Which sounds about right, considering Bichette only had one bad season over seven years with the team that drafted and developed him. The majority of Blue Jays fans though were supporters of Bo. Some argued about his long-term viability as a shortstop, but many agreed the offense was legit and a big part of the Blue Jays' success during that time.
Over seven seasons Bichette was worth 20.9 bWAR, hitting 111 home runs and 904 hits in 748 games. He led the league in hits twice as a Blue Jay and was part of four of their trips to the postseason. Bichette also famously came back from an injury to be a part of the Blue Jays lineup during the 2025 World Series against the LA Dodgers.
But none of that means anything to Mets fans who watched their front office spend $126 million to sign Bichette to a three-year contract this past offseason. With that kind of cash flowing to one player, it's easy to see why fans would want better than a 1-for-14 start from Bo.
