George Springer's first half was All-Star worthy

MLB insider Jon Heyman is apparently a big fan of Toronto’s George Springer, and he wasn’t afraid to show it on X (formerly twitter) on Sunday. That was when the All-Star game rosters were revealed and the Blue Jays veteran outfielder was left off the American League team. Springer wasn’t named an All-Star, alongside teammates Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and Alejandro Kirk in the original fan ballot vote, but Heyman felt the MLB players (who vote in the reserve players for the team) should have acknowledged Springers terrific first half.

Heyman took exception to the fact that Seattle Mariners star Julio Rodriguez got in over both Springer and Jo Adell of the LA Angels. “Julio Rodriguez (.695) made the All-Star team over George Springer (.886) and Jo Adell (.823). As usual, fans do a better job voting than players,” said Heyman on the social media platform.

Naturally, not everyone agreed with his take but Heyman does have an argument to make. Rodriguez is not only trailing springer in the OPS category, but also in every major offensive category including; home runs (16-11), RBI (53-43), and on-base percentage (.378-.307).

Rodriguez does have a better overall bWAR with a 3.4 rating compared to Springers 1.8, however, Rodriguez has accumulated most of that through his defense in centerfield, while Springer has mostly been in right field (31 games) and played a fair amount of DH (38 games) while getting a combined 13 games in left and centre.

Heyman’s comments about the fan vote though are interesting as the starting three outfielders for the AL squad are Aaron Judge of the Yankees and Javier Baez and Riley Greene of the Tigers.

All three of those players deserve their All-Star nods, especially Judge who is having a historic offensive season, but both Greene and Baez have some numbers that are below what Springer has done. Springer has a higher on-base percentage than either guy, he has more home runs than Baez and a higher OPS than Greene, while also sporting a much better strikeout percentage than Greene.

So while it’s great that Heyman is a fan of Springer and touting a player who helped the Blue Jays to a history making home stand, and was certainly snubbed in this years voting, Heyman may have been quick to jump at the fact that the fans would have gotten this one 100 percent correct.
