George Springer is on an insane run right now and it has dramatically sent the Blue Jays into first place. Toronto completely dominated the Yankees with a four game sweep and it does not look like they are slowing down any time soon. Springer absolutely headlined this outstanding team effort, belting four home runs and driving in 11 runs.
Springer has had the season fans have dreamt of. After watching his OPS dip below .750 for two consecutive seasons in Toronto, the expectations were not very high for the veteran going into 2025. All of a sudden, the four time All-Star is leading this offense. He is the leader on the team in home runs (15), RBI (51), SLG (.513), and OPS (.891).
George Springer's outstanding resurgence is leading the Blue Jays into first place in the AL East.
Without him this season, the Blue Jays could very well be below .500 and potential sellers at the deadline. This resurgence for the 35 year old is also impressive as he has the most home runs this season for anyone born in the 1980s, beating out the likes of Freddie Freeman, Carlos Santana, Paul Goldschmidt and Andrew McCutchen. Two other former Blue Jays retired in the last two weeks in Kevin Pillar and Whit Merrifield. Seeing this veteran still do it at this level is remarkable.
Springer leading the charge in this sweep may push Ross Atkins to be much more aggresive at the trade deadline. The offense doesn't feel like a direct need, especially with Springer locking things down at DH but you can never have enough sluggers when trying to contend in October.
Getting this team a game ahead in first place is not enough though. Toronto must keep the foot on the gas to get some breathing room. The Yankees and Rays will be breathing down their necks for the remainder of the season, just like always. If they can keep it up before the All-Star break with favorable matchups against the Angels, White Sox, and Athletics, then they will get another chance against New York to pick up ground in first place following the break.
Springer is a man on a mission this year and desperately wants another ring. Age is playing no factor in holding the veteran back of leading this team. Thanks to him, the Blue Jays can enjoy first place.
