Kazuma Okamoto on pace to do something no Blue Jays' "rookie" has done before

Okamoto has been such a great addition to the Blue Jays' roster and is on pace to make some team history.

The 2026 season has undoubtedly been a tough year for the Toronto Blue Jays so far. They currently sit third in the American League East with a 39-45 record (going into Jun 29) which is certainly below expectations.

The Blue Jays have also been trending in the wrong direction in a major way. At the time of this writing, Toronto has lost each of its last six games. With this rough losing streak, the Blue Jays are now 2.5 games behind the Seattle Mariners for the final wild card spot in the American League. The Houston Astros, Athletics, and Minnesota Twins are all also ahead of them on the wrong side of the playoff line.

While this season has undoubtedly been frustrating for the Blue Jays, Kazuma Okamoto has been one of their big bright spots. The 29-year-old infielder has been everything that the Blue Jays had hoped for, and he is now on pace to set a franchise record because of it.

At a little over the halfway point of the season, Okamoto has an impressive 19 home runs. With this, he is well on pace to be the first Blue Jays player to hit 30 home runs in their rookie season.

The current Blue Jays record holder for most rookie home runs is Eric Hinske, who hit 24 during the 2002 season. The only other former Blue Jays rookies who hit more home runs than Okamoto are J.P. Arencia (23), Rowdy Tellez (21), and Fred McGriff (20). However, Okamoto should have no problem passing them shortly, given the way he has been hitting the ball.

Blue Jays' Okamoto is only getting better as the season rolls on

While some rookies can cool off as the season rolls on, that certainly has not been the case for Okamoto. The 6-foot-1 infielder is only heating up as the campaign continues, and this is especially the case when it comes to his power.

Okamoto has hit seven home runs in the month of June, just like he did in May. However, four of his home runs this month have come in his last eight games alone. With that, there is no question that he has been reaching a new level with his power as of late.

If Okamoto can continue to produce at the plate like he has been, it could help the Blue Jays' chances of getting things back on track. A 30-home run rookie season from Okamoto would be special, and it will be fascinating to see if he can accomplish it.
