Fans are already poking holes in Bo Bichette's reasons for joining the New York Mets

He said what?

Bo Bichette is a New York Met. That won't get any easier to say no matter how much time goes by. Drafted and developed into a superstar player within Toronto's system, Bichette felt like a guy that should have been a Blue Jay for life. Instead he headed for the greener pastures of New York City, greener being the key word here.

Bichette landed a three-year $126 million deal resulting in a $42 million average annual value. That's a lot of green. And it's not just the money that's annoying fans about Bichette's decision to leave Toronto, but fans from several fan bases are questioning one of the reason's Bichette specifically said was his motivation for joining the Mets.

During his introductory press conference, Bichette said that his "first priority is winning and obviously this organization is doing everything it can to do that.”

That statement didn't get past many Blue Jays fans, as well as fans of the Philadelphia Phillies, who appeared to be one of the finalists, if not the perceived landing spot for Bo until the Mets swooped in at the last second. Phillies GM Dave Dombrowski has even gone on record saying they thought they had a deal done with Bo.

The fact that Bo prioritized winning but left a team that was in the World Series last year, and spurned a team that was in the NLDS last year, only to join a team that missed the playoffs entirely, seems a little backwards if winning is the priority. Sure, the New York Mets were in the NLCS just two years ago in 2024, but that was a team that didn't even win 90 games, and just snuck in as a Wild Card team.

Going back even further, the Mets have made the playoffs twice since Bo entered the league in 2019, while the Blue Jays have been a playoff team four times during Bichette's tenure.

Look the Mets are a good team, and they are still loaded with talent, they clearly have championship aspirations and after the last few days have made that even more clear with all of their additions. But it’s till hard to justify winning as the priority when you join a team that hasn’t won a whole lot lately.

Meantime, the Phillies, who play in the same division as the Mets were in the World Series just four years ago, and they have made it to the playoffs in four straight seasons, and nothing points to the contrary at the moment that would prevent them from making it five years in a row.

It's for sure become a sports cliché for every single big name free agent to point to winning as a reason as to why they signed with a team. But in this case, there are plenty of holes to poke in Bichette expressing that sentiment with the Mets.
