Canadians across the country didn't have the best day on Sunday after watching their team come up short in one of the marquee events of the winter Olympics. Team Canada's men's hockey team came up just short in a 2-1 overtime loss at the hands of Team USA in the gold medal game.
As Team USA scored the winning goal in OT, there was one very happy member of the Toronto Blue Jays and that was George Springer.
Blue Jays playoff hero celebrates Olympic win as Canadians settle for silver
Springer has previously expressed his love for the game of hockey. His green and blue gloves last year were a nod to the former Hartford Whalers franchise and the Connecticut native was also asked to donate his batting gloves to the Hockey Hall of Fame in Toronto.
Springer was also a pretty decent hockey player growing up and had to be convinced that there was a better path for him in baseball than there was on the ice. However, that didn't deter his love for the game and that love was on full display Sunday morning in Dunedin when Springer came out of the clubhouse cheering loudly about Team USA's win, while wearing a Team USA jersey.

Springer than took live batting practice in one of the team's backfield's against Kevin Gausman while still wearing his jersey.

If there is one Team USA hockey fan that could ever make Canadian's ok with losing the gold medal game, it would be Springer. Sure, it will take people a while to cope with the loss, but with what Springer has done for the Blue Jays during his five season's in Toronto, and with his heroic's in the playoffs last year, he's the one guy that gets a pass.
Springer's home run in the bottom of the seventh in Game 7 of the ALCS against the Seattle Mariners is marked as an exclamation point to Springer's tenure in Toronto. He signed one of the biggest contracts a free agent had ever gotten from the Blue Jays and it was done in the hopes that he would come through for Toronto in a moment as big as that.
Springer is entering his final contract year with the Blue Jays and the 36-year-old outfielder / DH will be looking to add another impressive season to his resume like he did last year. Springer put up a 4.8 bWAR while hitting 32 home runs, a .959 OPS and 154 hits in 140 games. He won the American League's Silver Slugger award as a DH, and with the absence of Anthony Santander for the next 5-6 months, he will likely be the team's primary DH once again.
Blue Jays fans will let Springer have this one for now, as long as he brings that kind of energy north of the border once the games get going.
