The Blue Jays recently decided to speed up the development on Trey Yesavage by sending him up to High-A despite that fact he's only seven starts into his professional career.
While the promotion shouldn't come as a surprise considering Yesavage, the No. 2 prospect in the organization per MLB Pipeline, has been excellent so far this year, it also shows that the Blue Jays are serious about putting him in the best position to succeed.
In seven starts with Single-A Dunedin, Yesavage posted a 2.43 ERA with a 2.48 FIP across 33 1/3 innings. He had a dazzling K/9 of 14.85 with a WHIP of 0.81 and an opposing batting average of .163.
Those numbers are great, and also great to see him limit the amount of free passes he's allowed on the bases, as he's walked just two batters after giving up six walks in his professional debut. He now h as a walk rate of 6.3%.
Yesavage will now head to High-A Vancouver, where he'll make his season debut later this week.
He won't be the only prospect making the trip up north, as Khal Stephen and Gage Stanifer also earned the call to High-A.
Blue Jays made the right call in promoting Trey Yesavage, Khal Stephen and Gage Stanifer
The biggest thing to watch with Yesavage after this promotion will be to see if he can continue to pound the strike zone. While he currently boasts an eye-popping strikeout rate of 43.3%, it was clear from the start that Single-A hitters were overmatched against his stuff.
He'll now get a chance to see how that stuff plays against hitters of a higher-caliber.
Stephen, MLB PIpeline's No. 10 prospect for the Blue Jays, will also be heading to Vancouver. He was taken in last year's draft alongside Yesavage, and they're on the same trajectory.
Stephen has a 2.06 ERA in 39.1 innings this year to go along with a 10.98 K/9 and 2.24 FIP. He also has a WHIP of 0.92.
Yesavage and Stephen are very big pieces of the Blue Jays' future, so it's encouraging to see the franchise be a bit more agressive in both of their promotions.
The third player moving up with them is Stanifer, who has thrived this year as a reliever.
He has an impressive 0.69 ERA this year in 26 innings out of the 'pen after he posted a 6.34 ERA in 59 innings last year as a starter. He has a high walk rate (11.7%), but hitters are only hitting .112 against him.
They'll all join the top prospect in Arjun Nimmala on a stacked Canadians roster. While it's still only High-A, the promotion of these three hot hitters is another reminder of how bright the future is for the Blue Jays.
