A former fifth-round draft pick of the Toronto Blue Jays continues to add teams to his lengthy resume. Cavan Biggio has just signed with a team that has become a perennial playoff contender, so naturally they are hated by every other fanbase; the Houston Astros. Of course there are other reasons people don't like the Astros that involve signs, stealing, trash cans and more, but we don't need to rehash that here.

The point is, Biggio joins his sixth different organization being traded by the Blue Jays at the 2024 trade deadline.

It's been a long and winding road for Biggio to stick in the majors since 2024. He was traded by Toronto to the World Champion Los Angeles Dodgers for reliever Braydon Fisher at the deadline but was released in August. Later that month he sigend with the San Fancisco Giants but didn't play in a big league game with them before he was traded in September to the Atlanta Braves.

Biggio played in four games with Atlanta to finish the year and then entered free agency for the first time. He was brought into the Kansas City Royals organization for 2025 and after 37 games where he produced a -0.2 bWAR, hitting .174/.296/.246 he was sent to the minors and put up a decent stat line in 41 games with Triple-A Omaha. He hit .285/.375/.464 with only 37 strikeouts and 20 walks in 176 plate appearances.

Kansas City released the 30-year-old right around the trade deadline and about a week later he signed with the LA Angels. He spent the rest of the year in their Triple-A organization and once again entered the offseason as a free agent.

That brings us to today where news broke indicating the former Blue Jay has been invited to Astros camp on a minor-league deal. Biggio will be trying to earn a spot on the team that his father played his entire career with. The Hall of Famer Craig Biggio spent 20 years with the Astro's, earning a 65.5 bWAR and getting to the HOF benchmark of 3,000 hits (3060 to be exact) while hitting 291 home runs.

Much like his father, Cavan, is a very versitile defender and has played evey position at the big league level outside of pitcher, catcher and shortstop - his father started behind the dish, before getting reps in the outfield and spending the majority of his career at second base. That versatility could earn him a role on the Astro's in 2026. They are pretty much set everywhere around the diamond, but could be one injury away from bringing Biggio to the bigs.

Many Blue Jays fans will always have a soft spot for Biggio and will want to see him succeed personally, but they could be conflicted now that he's joined the Astros. Of course, one of Toronto's best players from their 2025 championship run, George Springer, is also a former Astro and was heavily involved in the scandal that brought the Astros their World Series title in 2017.

Regardless, Biggio will be an interesting name to watch as Spring Training ramps up and guys push for a spot on the Opening Day roster.
