Former Toronto Blue Jays fan favourite Cavan Biggio is now with his sixth organization in the last two seasons. The 30-year-old utility player has agreed to a minor league deal with the Los Angeles Angeles, and has been assigned to Triple-A Salt Lake. Biggio was released by the Royals last week.

Biggio is a great player to utilize in your Immaculate Grid as he's becoming well travelled around MLB. After Toronto drafted him in the fith round of the 2016 MLB draft, he made his debut three years later on May 24, 2019. He stuck around for the whole season as he looked to cement himself as a core piece of the future for the rebuilding Blue Jays. Biggio slashed .234/.364/.439 with a 113 OPS+ and accumulating 3.1 bWAR as he hit a career high 16 home runs, stole a career high 14 bases, and managed a career high 83 hits while playing first, second, left and right.

That first year was really the high point for Biggio during his Toronto tenure as he was never able to replicate those kinds of numbers again. Biggio was traded on June 12, 2024 to the Los Angeles Dodgers and that began a stretch where he was moving every few months to a different franchise.

The Dodgers released Biggio in August and later that month he signed as a free agent with the Giants. About two weeks later, Biggio was traded to the Braves where he finished out the season. He entered the offseason as a free agent, signing a minor league contract with Kansas City, and in 37 games he hit .174/.296/246 with 12 hits, one home run and four RBI, 11 walks and 21 strike outs in 83 plate appearances.

The Angels signing of Biggio doesn't necessarily mean he will see the big leagues anytime soon, even if his production at the Triple-A level stays consistent. In 41 games with the Royals Triple-A affiliate, Biggio managed a .285/.375/.464 slash line with 43 hits, four home runs and 20 walks in 176 plate appearances. Much better numbers than he had at the major league level, however, Biggio is blocked by a bevy of other utility type players in the Angels system.

Nolan Schanuel, Christian Moore and Luis Rengifo can all play the same spots on the infield as Biggio can. They also made a move at the deadline to acquire Oswald Peraza as a defensive option off the bench in late game situations. Niko Kavadas is on the big league roster and gives the Halo a left-handed bat off the bench as well, currently blocking Biggio from providing that as a useful tool.

All the former Blue Jay can do at this point is keep grinding in the Angels system now, and hope that he turns some heads the next time there is an opening at the big league level.
