Life as a baseball player can be quite the roller coaster at times. That has been exactly the case this year for former Toronto Blue Jays infielder and utilityman Cavan Biggio. On Friday, the San Francisco Giants signed the 29-year-old to a minor league contract as he joins his third organization of the season.

After starting the year among the Jays’ main rotation of players, Biggio struggled to reproduce the offensive flair that he displayed towards the latter half of the 2023 season. In 44 games, he batted a dismal .200 with a .614 OPS, along with just 15 runs scored, 4 doubles, 2 home runs and 9 RBI. Having already spent six seasons with the club but often failing to reach the next level, Biggio was finallydesignated for assignment in early June in favour of an upward-trending Spencer Horwitz.

But not all appeared to be lost for Biggio, as his second chance came just shortly after. He was picked up by the NL West juggernauts Los Angeles Dodgers in a trade with the Jays in exchange for minor league pitcher Braydon Fisher. In moving to Los Angeles, Biggio now had all the opportunity to shine for a perennial contender and to prove his worth under a new prosperous environment. However, Biggio failed to capitalize once again on his chances as his struggles persisted. Over 30 games played with the Dodgers, he posted just a .192 batting average, .635 OPS, 11 runs scored, 3 home runs and 10 RBI. Ultimately, fate would repeat itself as Biggio would once again be designated for assignment and was subsequently released in early August.

By landing with the Giants, Biggio will get another chance of a bounceback with hopes to resurrect his once-promising MLB career. He will start his tenure with his new club in the minors with the Giants’ Triple-A affiliate Sacramento. Hopefully, the third time will be a charm for Biggio as he aims to work his way back to the big leagues.
