On Thursday, Bo Bichette got the start on Opening Day, where he put together an 0-for-4 in Toronto's tough loss. While it's far too early to jump the gun on Bichette' offense, the Blue Jays will need to assess some other leadoff options if Bichette is unable to have a rebound season after injuries impacted his showing in 2024.
For the past four seasons, George Springer has been Toronto's leadoff hitter, but he's moved down the lineup this year after experiencing some struggles in the past couple years.
But if Bichette continues to struggle at the top of the lineup, then shaking up the batting order is the only solution. The Blue Jays may need to experiment with their options at the top of the lineup to see if anything sticks.
Assessing the Blue Jays’ leadoff options if Bo Bichette struggles
Will Wagner
The Blue Jays have plenty of options for leadoff hitters if Bichette's offensive drought continues, and Will Wagner is one of the first options the team should consider. Wagner's a valuable member of the team since he can move all around the infield, and he hit .305 in 24 games last year in his first taste of MLB action.
The youngster got the opportunity to hit leadoff during camp, so it wouldn't be much of a stretch to have him lead off during the season. Giving him opportunities in the leadoff could help him develop. Wagner picked up his first hit of the season on Opening Day before going 2-for-3 on Friday, so he's off to a hot start to the season.
Wagner's disciplined approach at the plate and his ability to get on base make him a worthy option to consider in the leadoff spot. His strong on-base skills could provide the Blue Jays with more opportunities to score runs.
Andrés Giménez
The first home run of the #BlueJays' season, naturally, comes from the cleanup hitter.

Andrés Giménez has shown positive signs for the Blue Jays, hitting a two-run home run against the Baltimore Orioles on Opening Day out of the cleanup spot. While he has the opportunity to produce out of the cleanup spot, a move to leadoff could help jumpstart Toronto's offense.
He's also one of the fastest players in all of baseball, which would help him provide even more value as a table-setter at the top of the lineup. Giménez also does a solid job of making contact with the ball, as he ranked in the 86th percentile with a 15.3% strikeout rate last season.
Bichette should get plenty of runway to prove his worth as a leadoff hitter, but the Blue Jays do have some options to consider if he continues to struggle.
