5 Blue Jays that will be gone by the trade deadline

As we approach the MLB trade deadline, the tenure time of certain notable Toronto Blue Jays players could be ticking down by the second. That is because with the Blue Jays likely now in sell mode, their focus will be on obtaining valuable assets to help them return to contending status in the near future.

In order to do so, Toronto should maximize the value that they can get from the expiring contracts of various players by the Aug. 3 deadline. As a result, there are five Blue Jays that should be gone by the time the trade deadline rolls around.

Shane Bieber

The potential very last start of Shane Bieber in a Blue Jays uniform didn’t go as planned. But that doesn’t take away the fact that Bieber is a former Cy Young winner and knows exactly how to deliver when the going gets tough.

He did that last year when he came off his recovery from Tommy John surgery to help carry the Blue Jays all the way to the World Series. With the added rest he had earlier this year due to his injury, Bieber should have a lot left in the tank for any contenders down the stretch, making him a highly attractive target at the trade deadline.

George Springer

It appeared that Father Time had finally caught up to George Springer earlier this season, but then the 36-year-old veteran managed to find his game in recent weeks, making him a potentially impactful player once again. In his last 15 games, Springer has batted .288 with an .879 OPS, along with eight runs scored, four home runs and 13 RBIs.

With the ability to change a game with one swing of the bat as we witnessed last year in Game 7 of the ALCS, as well as taking his previous postseason performances into consideration, Springer could become a secret weapon in the playoffs for a contender for the World Series.

Max Scherzer

Some may be surprised to see Max Scherzer on this list. After all, he hasn’t been having a season that would warrant the attention from contenders. Not only has Scherzer been plagued with injuries, he also has been largely ineffective even when he was healthy, posting a 1-4 record with a 9.49 ERA and 1.82 WHIP in seven starts for the Blue Jays.

Nevertheless, Scherzer has shown in the past that he could be a big-game pitcher when the games mattered most, as we all saw from his postseason heroics from last season. So similar to what the Jays did for Kevin Kiermaier in 2024, Toronto will likely deal the three-time Cy Young winner to give him that one last chance to capture a World Series ring before retiring.

Daulton Varsho

Daulton Varsho might not be posting glowing offensive numbers all around so far in 2026. But he is still providing his usual elite defense in the field, which should attract many suitors ahead of Aug 3.

Just take a look at the recent fate of the defensive dynamo Harrison Bader, as he was acquired by contenders at the trade deadline to bolster their outfield defense down the stretch THREE times since 2022. So if Bader managed to draw such strong interest despite having never topped 17 home runs and 54 RBIs for his MLB career, think of what Varsho can attract with his 20+ home runs and 70+ RBIs potential to go along with his Gold Glove-calibre defense. As a result, he will be highly coveted at the trade deadline.

Kevin Gausman

Finally, we have one of the most reliable and effective pitchers in a Blue Jays uniform in recent memory (until probably this year) in Kevin Gausman. Serving as the ace of the Toronto pitching staff since 2022, Gausman has helped led the Jays to the postseason in three of his past four years while giving it his all whenever he took the mound.

This season, Gausman has surprisingly struggled to a 4-10 record with a 4.51 ERA and 1.27 WHIP in 22 starts for the Blue Jays. But with the ability to rise to the occasion in the biggest games, that is exactly what contenders looking to add a front end of the rotation arm to bolster their rotation down the stretch will want.

These five Blue Jays were all integral members of the Blue Jays' run to the 2025 World Series, but as individuals haven't done enough to get them back into contention in 2026. They are all also players who could become reinvigorated by going to an environement where there is a clear pathway to winning.

Age, and a long post-season can be some of the contributing factors here, but at the end of the day, they are part of a Blue Jays group that just didn't get it done.
