Yankees "perfect free agent fit" would leave Blue Jays fans fuming

This isn't what the Blue Jays fans want to see

MLB.com recently put out their picks for a perfect free agent match for every team, and their pick for one of Toronto's division rivals is just about the worst-case scenario for Toronto Blue Jays fans. The article has the Yankees, who, less than a month ago, were sent packing in the ALDS by the Blue Jays, as a perfect fit for shortstop Bo Bichette.

On one hand, this makes sense. The Yankees seemed to think they had a franchise shortstop on their hands in Anthony Volpe, but the former top prospect has struggled immensely as of late and is slated to miss the start of the 2026 season while recovering from surgery.

To add to their infield uncertainty, second baseman Jazz Chisholm is entering the final year of club control, and should be one of the top free agents in a very weak 2027 class.

One of the Yankees best hitters from 2025, Cody Bellinger, is also a free agent this offseason, which only increases the likelihood they would want to add an impact bat. Not only would Bichette fill their need in the infield, but he would add some much needed juice to their lineup.

The fact that the fit makes so much sense makes the prospect that the Blue Jays' shortstop since 2019 could leave for a division rival in free agency even worse. Bichette ranks second on the Blue Jays in hits, runs, RBI, and a number of other categories since he debuted, and has been excellent against the Yankees in his career, slashing .305/354/.506 with 13 homers and 49 RBI across 82 games.

Losing him would be a devastating blow to Jays fans, especially after he nearly won game seven of the World Series with one swing of the bat.

All that being said, this would require the Yankees not only to outbid the Blue Jays for Bichette's services, but also that he would want to go to the Bronx. While there was a report that he may be interested, it's hard to imagine him ever wearing anything other than a Blue Jays uniform.

The front office has some of the most spending power in baseball and has been extremely aggressive in free agency in recent years. As tough as the thought of losing a franchise shortstop may be, there's every reason to believe that if they want to bring him back, they will.
