Why this Blue Jays' top prospect could be Toronto’s biggest trade chip at the deadline

The Blue Jays have a valuable young asset on their hands with nowhere to put him.

After a dismal start to their 2026 campaign, the Toronto Blue Jays have somehow managed to put themselves back into the playoff picture in recent weeks. At 32-34 after Sunday’s thrilling comeback win against the Baltimore Orioles, the Blue Jays currently sit just half a game behind the Texas Rangers for the third and final wild card spot and seven games back from top spot in the American League East.

As long as Toronto remains in contention, they will definitely be buyers when the trade deadline rolls around. If that is indeed the case, the Blue Jays actually have a valuable top prospect that they could use as their biggest trade chip. That prospect is none other than outfielder RJ Schreck.

RJ Schreck has become a valuable piece in the Blue Jays’ farm system

Obtained from the Seattle Mariners in exchange for veteran Justin Turner during the 2024 trade deadline, Schreck has blossomed during the past couple of seasons in the Jays’ organization. In particular, the Blue Jays No. 8 prospect according to MLB Pipeline ascended four minor league levels during the 2025 season, reaching all the way to Triple-A Buffalo by the end of the year. In doing so, Schreck posted career bests in home runs (18), on-base percentage (.395) and OPS (.854).

This year with the Bisons, the 25-year-old outfielder has posted a .784 OPS, along with 34 runs scored, nine doubles, seven home runs and 36 RBIs in just 56 total games played while getting regular playing time in the Buffalo lineup. More impressively, Schreck has maintained his strong plate discipline at the high minor leagues level, registering 39 walks to go along with 44 strikeouts in over 229 plate appearances to date. And of course, he made a strong impression this past spring with the Jays with a tremendous defensive play to boot.

With the Blue Jays loaded with left-handed hitting outfielders at the major league level in Daulton Varsho, Jesus Sánchez, Addison Barger and Nathan Lukes, the path to the big leagues appears to be blocked considerably for Schreck. That doesn’t even include the sudden rise of surprising rookie Yohendrick Pinango. For someone that was practically available for the taking during the recent Rule 5 Draft, Pinango is now excelling in the majors since making his MLB debut with Toronto just last month.

Since opportunities could come few and far between for Schreck in a Jays uniform, Toronto should make the most of their overload of talent in the outfield position by using Schreck in potential deals at the trade deadline to bring in assets of immediate need for the stretch run. That way, Schreck could see playing time in the majors sooner while the Blue Jays could get their missing piece for their playoff puzzle in a win-win scenario for both parties.
