Blue Jays unexpectedly relying on their rookie class this season

Injuries and underperformance have hurt the Toronto Blue Jays in 2026, but their rookie class has kept them afloat.

The Toronto Blue Jays look a lot different at the beginning of June than they did on Opening Day. Nine players on the Blue Jays current active roster who were not on the Opening Day roster. Of those nine, five had never played in MLB before 2026. Trey Yesavage, who started the season on the IL, had made just three regular-season starts in MLB before this season, making him still a rookie.

There hasn't been a lot that has gone right for the Blue Jays in 2026. The team has lost many of its key players to injuries. That, coupled with poor play from those who are healthy, has made it difficult for the Blue Jays to reach, let alone maintain, a record at .500. If there is a silver lining, however, the onslaught of injuries has given several rookies a chance to shine in the big leagues.

Blue Jays' rookies have come to the rescue

P Trey Yesavage

It's hardly a surprise that Yesavage has impressed in 2026 after how he performed in last year's postseason. Expectations were sky-high for Yesavage after his record-breaking playoff performance. However, he started the season on the IL with a right shoulder impingement.

Since returning to the Blue Jays' roster on April 28, Yesavage has continued to cement himself as one of the most exciting young pitchers in MLB. In seven starts (prior to Jun. 5), he has a 2.19 ERA with 39 strikeouts, while only giving up nine runs. He's added stability to a Blue Jays rotation that has been battered by injuries and was a big part of the Blue Jays' brief return to .500.

Yesavage is seventh in odds for the AL Rookie of the Year award. If he wins, the Blue Jays would be awarded an additional draft pick. Either way, Yesavage is proving himself to be a pivotal part of the Blue Jays' present and future.

P Spencer Miles

Spencer Miles has been an unlikely hero for the Blue Jays in 2026. The Blue Jays acquired Miles during the offseason in the Rule 5 draft from the San Francisco Giants. He'd pitched 14.2 innings during his minor league career and missed significant time from 2023 to 2025 with injuries.

Miles has a 3.47 ERA in 16 appearances, including two starts with the Blue Jays while the team has leaned on him heavily since DFA'ing Eric Lauer on May 10.

In his first three appearances after the Blue Jays DFA'd Lauer, Miles gave up just one run. He did struggle in his most recent outing against the Baltimore Orioles, when he gave up six runs in three innings. Despite that, Miles has more than outperformed expectations this season and has kept the Blue Jays afloat despite only having three healthy starters.

P Adam Macko

Adam Macko was called up to the Blue Jays after Tommy Nance landed on the IL. He has yet to give up a walk in nine appearances, including one start, with Toronto. He also hadn't given up a run until Wednesday night's game against the Atlanta Braves, when he gave up a three-run home run to Ozzie Albies. Despite that, Macko has had an impressive to his MLB career.

C Brandon Valenzuela

Brandon Valenzuela was called up to the Blue Jays after Alejandro Kirk fractured his thumb off a foul tip in early April. During his time in the big leagues, Valenzuela has impressed, particularly with his defence. He, along with the Blue Jays' other active catcher, Tyler Heineman, is tied for second among MLB catchers in Fielding Run Value (+6). Similar to Kirk, Valenzuela has proven to be an elite framer, ranking in the 98th percentile for pitch framing.

He's also shown to be capable offensively. He's slashing .231/.325/.398 with 25 hits and five home runs. He's also shown solid plate discipline. His 11.7 percent walk rate is the fourth-highest on the Blue Jays, and his 4.09 pitches per plate appearance is above league average (3.88). Valenzuela's impressive performance, coupled with struggles by Heineman, has led the Blue Jays to lean on him more during Kirk's absence.

LF Yohendrick Piñango

Yohendrick Piñango was added to the Blue Jays roster when Nathan Lukes went on the IL with a hamstring strain. In his first ten games in MLB, he slashed .423/.444/.462 with four RBIs. The Blue Jays still chose to send Piñango down to Triple-A, though he wouldn't be there for long. Barger landed back on the IL after just one game due to elbow inflammation and Piñango returned to the Blue Jays.

Since returning, Piñango has slashed .258/.300/.439 with three home runs and 12 RBIs. Like Valenzuela, Piñango has made a case for staying with the Blue Jays even once the injured players return. Piñango's play was strong enough that when Lukes returned from the IL, the Blue Jays decided to send down Davis Schneider instead of Piñango.

IF Charles McAdoo

There aren't many better ways to get your first big league hit than to hit a two-run home run as part of a late comeback. The Blue Jays trailed the Orioles 5-0 entering the seventh inning in McAdoo's first MLB game. After the Blue Jays chipped away, McAdoo brought them to within one run with a two-run shot and the Blue Jays would go on to win 6-5.

McAdoo was called up to the Blue Jays after Sosa was placed on the IL and he adds much-needed depth to the infield, but he's only played in three games.

The Blue Jays' 2026 season has been turbulent to say the least. After coming so close to winning the World Series in 2025, it's easy to be disappointed by the Blue Jays' record and the number of injuries they've endured. If there's a silver lining, however, the performances from the rookies has shown that the future is very bright for the Blue Jays.
