Major League Baseball has introduced a variety of rule changes to encourage certain elements of the game. Think about bigger bases to increase stolen bases. Or the rule regarding number of pickoffs a pitcher can execute during an at-bat.
The one thing that has remained steady is the strikeout. A few years ago, MLB cracked down on foreign substances on the baseball after pitchers were racking up a boatload of strikeouts. The pitchers were getting better, and teams with high strikeout pitchers were performing well.
While there was a brief drop in strikeouts, the long-term impact still seems to favor strikeouts because of spin rate and velocity. The 2026 Toronto Blue Jays pitching staff could be on track to shatter strikeout records this season. Just look at the composition of their projected starting rotation!
Why the Blue Jays pitching staff could be among the league leaders in one key stat
How does Dylan Cease sound? Cease is not only durable, but he racks up the punchouts at an incredible level. He's had at least 214 strikeouts or more in five straight seasons with an incredible 29.7% strikeout rate since the start of 2021. His 1,106 strikeouts are tops in MLB during that time span.

It's not just Cease. Shane Bieber, who is being delayed by forearm tightness after pitching deep in the playoffs last season, has plenty of high strikeout seasons on his resume. One of the reasons the Blue Jays traded pitching prospect Khal Stephen to acquire Bieber was because they were hoping he could recapture his 2020 AL Cy Young form. True to form, Bieber led MLB with 122 strikeouts that season.
Think about a potential full season of Trey Yesavage after his 11 strikeouts of the Yankees in the ALDS. Kevin Gausman led the American League in strikeouts in 2023 and has nearly 800 punchouts in a Toronto uniform. Cody Ponce arrives in Canada after going 17-1 with a 1.89 ERA and 252 strikeouts last season. Ponce holds the KBO record for most strikeouts in a nine-inning game with 18.
There is nothing wrong with the Blue Jays employing a high strikeout staff. If the opposing batters ever put the ball in play, then they will find a stringent defense lined up in the field. There will be plus defenders at multiple positions in the everyday lineup.
This is important because when the ball is not being put into play, the defenders could grow a little weary. That will not be the case for the Blue Jays since they employ a talented group of defenders. Daulton Varsho will be able to flag down anything hit in the outfield.
Strikeouts are great when it's your team sending the opposing batters back to the dugout. The games tend to move faster. The offense will be able to breathe easier knowing they have a pitching staff helping them win games. Team morale will be even more heightened knowing that they won't have to overcome enormous deficits.
Get ready to see a ton of punchouts when watching the Blue Jays this season. An opposing batter may invoke the ABS challenge system, but the talent of these pitchers should confirm that the Blue Jays have a pretty talented pitching staff.
