Oct. 20, 2025, will go down as one of the best days in Toronto Blue Jays history. The Blue Jays defeated the Seattle Mariners in Game 7 of the 2025 ALCS to advance to the World Series. It's the first time in 32 years that the Blue Jays will play in the World Series and they will take on the defending World Series champion Los Angeles Dodgers.

It's common for sports teams in a city to support one another. During the Blue Jays' 2025 postseason run, players of the Toronto Maple Leafs have attended postseason games at Rogers Centre, and Maple Leaf fans remained at Scotiabank Arena to watch the Blue Jays eliminate the New York Yankees in the 2025 ALDS. However, there was some negative buzz and nervous energy before Game 7 thanks to something Vladimir Guerrero Jr. wearing something.

Vladdy was wearing Matthews Maple Leaf jersey before Game 7

Before Game 7, Guerrero Jr. was wearing a white Auston Matthews Toronto Maple Leafs jersey. Over the last 21 years the Maple Leafs have not been very successful playing in winner take all games and wearing a Matthews jersey had many fans worried the hockey teams' curse would carry over to the Blue Jays.

Since defeating the Ottawa Senators in the first round of the 2004 Stanley Cup Playoffs, the Maple Leafs have lost their last eight winner take all games. Seven of those has been in the Matthews era, and six of the losses were in a Game 7. As Maple Leafs captain, Matthews has been disappointing in Game 7 situations when his team needed him the most.

To make matters worse, the only Game 7 the Blue Jays have ever played in was when the team fell in the 1985 ALCS to the Kansas City Royals. However, the Blue Jays prevailed in their second Game 7 in franchise history, giving their fans a night they won't soon forget.

The Blue Jays trailed 3-1 entering the bottom of the seventh inning. Then, Addison Barger and Isiah Kiner-Falefa got on base to start the inning. Andrés Giménez then bunted Barger and Kiner-Falefa over to set up George Springer with runners on second and third with one out.

Springer hit a three-run home run to put the Blue Jays up 4-3 sending Rogers Centre into a frenzy. Springer's home run will go down as one of the most iconic home runs in not only Blue Jays history, but MLB history. Springer's go-ahead home run in the seventh inning was reminiscent José Bautista's go-ahead home run in the seventh inning of Game 5 in the 2015 ALDS against the Texas Rangers.

Jeff Hoffman shut the door in the ninth to close the game and seal the victory as the Blue Jays took the decisive game 4-3.

In the win, Guerrero Jr. went 1-4. Guerrero's only hit came in the first inning, but it helped the Blue Jays score their first run. After being part of the Blue Jays organization for 10 years, signing with the team in 2015, Guerrero Jr. couldn't help himself but get emotional after the series win.

Despite the ill-advised attire worn to Rogers Centre ahead of the game, Guerrero and the Blue Jays will have home field advantage for the World Series against the Dodgers, which begins on Friday night.
