During this past season, the Toronto Blue Jays acquired pitcher Shane Bieber from the Cleveland Guardians in exchange for pitching prospect Khal Stephen. The move was understandable, as the Blue Jays were in need of another impactful and proven starting pitcher. With this, it made sense that the Blue Jays brought in the 2020 Cy Young Award winner.
Following the trade and recovering from the Tommy John surgery he had in 2024, Bieber appeared in seven regular-season games for the Blue Jays, where he had a 4-2 record, a 3.57 ERA, and 37 strikeouts. He also had a 2-1 record, a 3.86 ERA, and 18 strikeouts in five appearances during the Blue Jays' playoff run this past fall, making his trade deadline pickup for the Blue Jays completely worth it.
After the season, Bieber opted into his $16 million player option with the Blue Jays for the 2026 season rather than testing the market as a free agent. This was certainly good news at the time, but now, this season has certainly been off to a very rough start for the two-time All-Star.
Bieber has been sidelined since spring training due to forearm fatigue and has yet to pitch in a game this season for the Blue Jays. This has certainly not been ideal for the Blue Jays, as Bieber is one of their most important pitchers and now things are only getting more concerning, as the Blue Jays provided another rough update regarding Bieber on Monday.
Blue Jays provide concerning update on Bieber
After acquiring Lenyn Sosa from the Chicago White Sox on Monday, the Blue Jays have announced that they have transferred Bieber to the 60-day injured list to make room for their new infielder on their roster. This is undoubtedly rough news, as it guarantees that Bieber will be sidelined until at least late May.

With the Blue Jays having a bad start to the season and having multiple players sidelined, it is certainly rough to see Bieber hitting the 60-day injured list. Furthermore, given the kind of injury he has and his history, it is also fair to wonder how long the 30-year-old will need before he is actually good to return to the mound.
If Bieber ends up needing more time to recover once we get to late May, things will only continue to get more concerning. It would certainly be disappointing if the Orange, California native missed a significant chunk of the season. This is especially so when noting that he has the potential to provide good value for the Blue Jays with his current deal.
However, until Bieber gets back into game action for the Blue Jays, the concern of there being no pay off by him re-signing with Toronto will linger.
