With the San Francisco Giants practically one game out from the bottom of the league standings, it appears that the reality of being trade deadline sellers is beginning to settle in. The Toronto Blue Jays could take full advantage of that by revisiting their trade partner from earlier this season.

Tyler Fitzgerald may not have ended up working out as planned, as he was ultimately dealt to the Los Angeles Dodgers before even appearing in a single game for the Blue Jays. However, San Francisco have some much more attractive pieces that could help Toronto this time around.

Looking ahead with a few prominent Giants players on expiring contracts, the Jays could put together a solid package to get a deal done. As a result, the following trade proposal could both satisfy San Francisco’s needs and boost Toronto’s playoff hopes at the same time.

A win now move for the Blue Jays could see their former Cy Young winner return

The Giants’ main need is pitching depth behind ace Logan Webb, especially if both pending free agents Robbie Ray and Tyler Mahle leave following the end of the 2026 season. With the additions of both No. 5 Jays prospect Gage Stanifer and No. 4 Jays prospect Ricky Tiedemann, they will have two future solid potential front end of the rotation pieces in place as a result.

Stanifer is coming off a huge 2025 campaign in which he posted a stellar 2.86 ERA with an impressive 161 strikeouts in 110 total innings across three minor league levels in the Jays’ system. As for Tiedemann, he was at one point in time the top prospect in the entire Blue Jays’ organization before being beset with injuries that have held him back in the past couple of years. Now healthy, the 23-year-old left-hander will hope to show everyone once again why he was a top 100 prospect in all of baseball back in 2023 and 2024.

In terms of the Blue Jays, they could be giving up two future star pitchers for a couple of potential rentals. But one of them consists of one of the best pure hitters in the game in Luis Arraez. As a former three-time batting champion and two-time hits leader, Arraez sports a career .317 batting average over his eight seasons in the majors.

More importantly, as an elite contact hitter, he rarely strikes out with 48 strikeouts the most ever he has accumulated in one season back in 2021. As MLB insider Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic has suggested, one of the Jays’ ideal trade deadline target is a high-contact, high-average hitter and Arraez would fit the bill exactly.

As for Ray, Toronto would be bringing back their former Cy Young winner for a second go-around. For a Blue Jays rotation that had been decimated by injuries throughout their 2026 season, the 34-year-old veteran would help solidify the Jays’ starting five for the stretch run.

Coming off an All-Star campaign with the Giants in 2025 in which he compiled an 11-8 record, 3.65 ERA with 186 strikeouts in 182.1 innings pitched, Ray has underperformed a bit for a struggling San Francisco team this season. In 15 games to date, he has amassed a 6-6 record with a 3.70 ERA, giving up 14 home runs and 42 walks to go along with 80 strikeouts in 87.2 innings of work. It's possible though that Ray regains his spark as he rejoins his former club, who would be in the middle of a playoff chase.

So both parties would fill their needs and have an impactful future ahead of them, with the Jays enhancing their chances at making the postseason and the Giants gaining strong, young pitching depth.
