Sometimes, timing could mean everything. In the case for the Toronto Blue Jays and one of their newest acquisitions in Tyler Fitzgerald, that timing just didn’t happen to fall in his favour despite given the renewed opportunity. On Tuesday, as per Sportsnet, the former San Francisco Giants infielder was optioned by Toronto to their Triple-A affiliate Buffalo Bisons without even having the chance to play a game with his new club.
Blue Jays send down Fitzgerald to make room for Sosa
The Blue Jays had originally acquired Fitzgerald from the Giants on April 4 after he was designated for assignment by San Francisco just a few days earlier. The 28-year-old infielder was expected to serve as valuable infield depth for Toronto going forward. Following the trade, Fitzgerald was optioned to Buffalo where he awaited his chance to be called up.
That wait apparently would only last three days as he would find himself promptly recalled to the big league club on April 7. With the Blue Jays struggling with generating offense at the time, Fitzgerald was expected to help provide a much-needed offensive boost off the bench. That was because in his three prior seasons with the Giants when he was up with the ballclub, the 28-year-old infielder had posted a solid .252 average, .739 OPS, along with 75 runs scored, 21 home runs and 53 RBIs over 178 career MLB games played.
Not only that, the speedy Fitzgerald has also shown to be a threat on the basepaths, having stolen 28 bases in 36 career attempts. In addition, despite being mainly an infielder by trade, he has shown that he could potentially be a solid utilityman as well after taking reps in five different positions in the infield and outfield back in 2024. As a result, Fitzgerald could actually help the Blue Jays in more ways than one depending on how he would be deployed by Blue Jays manager John Schneider.
However, Toronto was active on the trade market once again, this time acquiring second baseman Lenyn Sosa from the Chicago White Sox in exchange for outfielder prospect Jordan Rich and a player to be named later or cash this past Monday. With redundancy now in the Blue Jays’ lineup with both Fitzgerald and Sosa in the mix, Fitzgerald became the unfortunate roster casualty as Sosa would overtake him on the depth chart. The latter would promptly make his Blue Jays debut on Tuesday night as a pinch hitter, recording his first hit and run scored in the process.
As for Fitzgerald, he will now have to patiently wait for his opportunity once again as he hopes to re-establish his career in the majors in due time.
