During the 2024 season, the Toronto Blue Jays had many standouts that helped solidify their infield as the year progressed. Players such as Ernie Clement, Spencer Horwitz, Leo Jiménez, Addison Barger, Davis Schneider and even Will Wagner made the most of their opportunities. Each showed that they could provide solid value and production from the infield heading into 2025. That doesn’t include their top infield hitting prospect in Orelvis Martinez, who could also be ready for the big show this upcoming year.
However, despite the luxury of riches in the infield already, the Jays appear to be serious about landing some high-end infield talent this offseason. According to MLB insider Jon Morosi, in addition to the obvious top free agent in Juan Soto, he indicated that the Jays are also interested in power-hitting infielder Willy Adames.
Sure sounds like the Blue Jays are serious about landing a high-end infielder
Morosi suggested that a number of teams may love him in his primary position as a shortstop, but it doesn’t take away from the fact that some might consider him in a different position, such as third base. Moreover, he believed that the Jays want to land a major free agent this offseason, Soto or no Soto, so Adames would certainly fit the bill.
Who wouldn’t want Adames? After all, he is coming off a sensational 2024 campaign with the Milwaukee Brewers in which he posted career-bests in runs scored (93), hits (153), doubles (33), home runs (32), RBI (112), stolen bases (21) and total bases (282). With four consecutive 20+ home runs and 70+ RBI seasons, he has the ability to provide consistent run production in the heart of the lineup for any contender. At the young age of 29, Adames should also have plenty of prime years remaining ahead of him. In addition, he would represent a huge offensive upgrade over any of the Jays’ current infield options heading into next season.
With recent rumors of those being in on Adames, among them included division rivals Boston Red Sox and even potentially the New York Yankees if their pursuit of Soto fails. As a result, the Jays will be up against some strong competition already just within their own division, let alone the rest of the league. The absolute nightmare scenario for Jays’ fans would be seeing one or both of Soto and Adames land in the AL East, but not with Toronto. So to prevent that from happening, it will be up to the Jays to act soon before it’s too late.
Don't forget that the Blue Jays have already been linked to both Gleyber Torres and Ha-Seong Kim in the first month or so of the offseason. The club is clearly casting a wide net in search of some offensive firepower, but it's clear that a lot of their pursuits are centering around top-tier infield help.
