With the MLB trade deadline approaching, the Toronto Blue Jays will likely be buyers once again this year. That is because with wins in five of their past six games and now just one game below .500 (on June 21), the Blue Jays are right back in the thick of things for the playoff race.
In order to reel in some helpful assets, the Blue Jays will need to part with some of their promising young players to get any deal done. But among their top prospects, Sean Keys and his rising breakout performance in 2026 so far has suddenly made him a hot commodity for Toronto in more ways than one come the trade deadline.
Sean Keys could be a valuable piece for the Blue Jays going forward
Selected by the Blue Jays in the fourth round back in the 2024 MLB Draft, Keys has ascended through their minor league system in just a little over two years time. Last season with the Jays’ affiliate High-A Vancouver, the 23-year-old infielder put up big power numbers with 19 home runs and 72 RBIs in 119 games played, but left a bit to be desired with just a .217 batting average to show for.
However, Keys has by far exceeded expectations for Toronto this year. After a strong start to his 2026 campaign with the Blue Jays’ affiliate Double-A New Hampshire, he earned a well-deserved promotion to Triple-A Buffalo. Following the move, Keys has continued to dominate even at the higher level.

Collectively, the 23-year-old prospect has compiled a .288 average, 1.009 OPS, along with 49 runs scored, 13 doubles, 17 home runs, 44 RBIs and six stolen bases in just 62 total minor league games played. More impressively, Keys has managed to hit above a .300 clip while maintaining a 1.000+ OPS and close to 1:1 walk-to-strikeout ratio at Buffalo, showing that he is more than ready for the big show any time now. Just to put an exclamation mark on what he has achieved thus far, he has even recently hit a home run in three consecutive games in Triple-A just this past week.
The Blue Jays and general manager Ross Atkins have two routes that they could pursue at the trade deadline. Toronto could either package Keys in a deal by selling really high on him while he continues to rake. Or, the Jays could make the bold move in dealing from their current big league roster knowing that the 23-year-old slugging prospect is ready for the majors and waiting for his shot.
Either way, the rise of Keys has just made the upcoming deadline that much more intriguing for the Blue Jays in their quest to return to the postseason.
