Entering the 2025 MLB season, the expectations for the Toronto Blue Jays were not too high to say the least. After all, they were coming off a disappointing 2024 campaign in which they missed the playoffs for the first time in three years. To add insult to injury, the Blue Jays even finished dead last in the American League East.
Not only that, during the past offseason, Toronto missed out on many big name free agents including Juan Soto, Max Fried, Corbin Burnes and Alex Bregman to name a few. Things didn’t look too optimistic for the Jays until they finally reeled in a couple of solid players in Anthony Santander and Jeff Hoffman. As a result, heading into the season, the Blue Jays faithful had some hope for the team, but was still preparing for the worst.
Reassessing what a successful season is for the 2025 Blue Jays
So what would a successful 2025 season be for the Blue Jays? Had it still been the start of this year, perhaps being able to finally have a sustainable offense, register a record above .500 and challenge for a wild card playoff spot would have satisfied many of the Toronto fans already. After all, any improvement from last season would mean things were heading in the right direction.
However, the Jays have come a long way since then. After a rather slow start to 2025, Toronto has surprised everyone with their strong play in recent weeks. In doing so, they now find themselves in first place in the AL East and actually only four wins away from first overall in the entire league. Their new-style offense utilizing smart hitting and running, along with their pitching slowly but surely coming around, has ultimately provided Jays fans with lots of renewed hope and excitement for this team.
With what we have seen in their recent surge, should we reassess and change our view on what a successful 2025 season for the Jays would be now? Is it now suddenly World Series or bust?
In reality, we should still temper our expectations as the players gradually round into form and find their killer instinct to win important ballgames down the stretch. As a result, if the Jays manage to make the postseason and even win a round or two, that should be the standard of a successful 2025 campaign for Toronto. And if they end up going all the way to the World Series and beyond, that would be perfect icing on the cake for what many were expecting was going to be just a normal bounce back season.
Nevertheless, the key now for the Blue Jays is to maintain and build on their momentum that they have gained during the past couple of months by having an impactful trade deadline and continue to keep surprising us with the strong play all the way to the postseason.
