If the Toronto Blue Jays keep on winning like they have done recently, the more likely it is that when the trade deadline comes around, they will no doubt be buyers. Currently atop the American League East and just four wins away from first overall in the league, the Blue Jays should make moves in the coming weeks to help bolster their roster for the stretch run.
But with the success that they have had with their current players, should Toronto take it easy and maintain more or less what they have already, or should they be aggressive and do whatever it takes to land some key players that could move the needle?
MLB insider believes the Blue Jays will be aggressive at the trade deadline
Well, according to MLB insider Ken Rosenthal, he believes that the Blue Jays will be aggressive at the trade deadline. On the recent episode of Foul Territory, Rosenthal indicated that Ben Nicholson-Smith of Sportsnet had previously pointed out that in the past “when the Jays have been buyers, they have been aggressive.” In fact, they would often make at least two ot three moves, instead of taking the conservative approach.
As a result, Rosenthal further emphasized, “This would be normal behaviour for them (Blue Jays) to be aggressive, not unusual behaviour. So I do expect that they are going to go for it, so to speak … It’s simply the way they have acted in the past.”
Looking back to their recent contending years, the Jays added key pieces in Robbie Ray, Ross Stripling, Taijuan Walker and Jonathan Villar at the deadline during the COVID-shortened 2020 season. In 2021, Toronto got bullpen cogs in Brad Hand and Joakim Soria, along with their big-time trade in landing Minnesota Twins ace José Berríos. Berríos has since been a mainstay in the Jays starting rotation ever since.
For 2022, it was Whit Merrifield, Mitch White, Zach Pop and Anthony Bass. Finally, for 2023, there was Genésis Cabrera, Jordan Hicks and Paul DeJong, although DeJong had left a lasting impression for all the wrong reasons.
And if we look even further back all the way to the Alex Anthopoulos era, we don’t need to explain too much on what monumental moves he did during that fateful 2015 summer to instantly propel the Jays into contending status once again.
With this current Toronto club, they may not need the earth-shattering big-name player additions to change their fortunes like what they did back in 2015. But to be able to add quality depth to both their starting pitching and bullpen, along with a solid power bat will likely be their main needs to address come the trade deadline to make the team complete.
As a result, one should expect Jays GM Ross Atkins to pretty much follow their recent history and make two to three impactful moves at the trade deadline when all is said and done to hopefully push Toronto to the next level.
