When 28-year-old Mitch White returned from the injured list and rejoined the Toronto Blue Jays in June of this season, there was at least some reason to believe that he would revert back to his pre-Blue Jays ways and become a decent multi-inning relief pitcher.

In his very first outing of the year, it became apparent that that was not the case. Instead, Jays fans were once again left holding their collective breaths while he took the mound. In total, he made just 10 appearances for the big league club before they cut bait after landing Jordan Hicks. In 12.2 innings of work, White allowed 11 runs (10 earned) on 15 hits, which was more than enough to get him designated for assignment by the Jays.

Sure, just 10 outings was a bit of a short leash for White, but this has a lot to do with the fact that he is A.) out of minor league options and B.) coming off of another 10 outing showing last year in which he also struggled to get batters out with any sort of real consistency. In 43 innings for the Jays after coming over at the 2022 trade deadline, he had a 7.74 ERA thanks to a whopping 37 earned runs allowed.

So here we are, just a few days after White was DFA'd, and the Blue Jays have officially announced that he went unclaimed on waivers. He has shown a few redeeming qualities in his big league career, so it's only the slightest bit surprising that he was not lost on waivers. Instead, White will be sent outright to Triple-A where he will rejoin the Buffalo Bisons, likely filling a long-relief/opener role that he's become adjusted to in the Jays organization.

For now, White is not going to be back up in the big league bullpen for the Blue Jays. Since he was designated for assignment, he no longer takes up a spot on the 40-man roster and is not likely to make a serious push for a spot on it any more this season.
