Toronto Blue Jays Opening Day probable pitchers & starting lineups vs. Tampa Bay Rays, March 28
The Blue Jays are set to open the season on the road against the Tampa Bay Rays.
Opening Day is finally here!
With the Rogers Centre undergoing a second round of renovations, the Toronto Blue Jays will start the regular season on an extended road trip for the second campaign in a row. It has been 176 days since the Jays last took the field in Minnesota for their whimper of a Wild Card showing. There's no doubt that Bo Bichette and Vladimir Guerrero Jr. have to take the reigns this year to prove the doubters wrong.
The Jays take on the AL East rival Tampa Bay Rays to open a four-game series at Tropicana Field. The Rays finished the 2023 regular season 99-63 and second in the division after getting off to a torrid start. Jays fans will recognize some familiar names returning for Tampa, like Randy Arozarena and Yandy Díaz. As usual, the Rays are likely to boast an underrated starting rotation.
Probable starting pitchers
- The Blue Jays will send veteran right-hander José Berríos to the hill this afternoon. The 29-year-old had a solid bounce-back year in 2023, finishing with an 11-12 record, 3.65 ERA, and 184 strikeouts in 189 2/3 innings across a full slate of 32 starts. This will mark his second Opening Day start for Toronto. Hopefully he is allowed to go longer than three innings.
- The Rays will counter with 29-year-old ace Zach Eflin. The righty finished his first season in Tampa Bay with an impressive 16-8 record, a 3.50 ERA, and 186 strikeouts in 177 2/3 innings. Eflin is coming off a tumultuous spring training in which he posted an 8.49 ERA, 1.71 WHIP, and five home runs in 11 2/3 innings.
