Today's The Day: Ex-Blue Jays backstop Danny Jansen will make MLB history
The day is finally upon us: Danny Jansen is going to make MLB history in the Blue Jays vs. Red Sox matchup.
We're here, folks. Monday's action will see the Toronto Blue Jays and Boston Red Sox square off in a double-header, with one of the games having some historical significance behind it.
Back on June 26, the Jays and Sox had made it to the top of the second inning before weather forced the remainder of the game to be pushed to a later date. When the game resumes, the Blue Jays will have a runner on first and there will be one out.
Danny Jansen, a long-time Blue Jays catcher who started this game back in June, was traded to the Red Sox at the deadline, and is now going to become the first player in MLB history to play in the same game for both teams. In fact, he was at the plate when the game was initially put on hold.
Danny Jansen's historic day is finally upon us
Only making matters more goofy and fun is the fact that Jansen is going to be behind the plate for what was at one point his at-bat. The Blue Jays have already announced that Brian Serven will pinch-hit for him. So Jansen's at-bat will be given to Serven and Jansen himself will be catching.
On Boston's side, Enmanuel Valdez, Dom Smith and Reese McGuire are no longer on the roster, so the box score is going to be a wild one to look at on their end. Ditto for Toronto, though, as Jansen, Justin Turner, Isiah Kiner-Falefa and Kevin Kiermaier are no longer on the team, either.
Fans of chaos are in for a treat on Monday afternoon. MLB Scoring Changes on X has also confirmed that the scorecard will be sent to the MLB Hall of Fame following the game as well.
This story has been ran through the headlines around the nation for weeks now, but it's always cool to be witnessing history. For the Blue Jays, they'll have two chances on Monday to continue to march towards a .500 record on the season. Their current four-game winning streak has seen them get within just five games of that mark.
