Wild Danny Jansen stat suggests he can make MLB history in August game vs. Blue Jays
Couldn’t Jansen have done it while with the Blue Jays? Probably not.
Former Toronto Blue Jays catcher Danny Jansen may only have been with the Boston Red Sox for just a couple of days following his trade this past Saturday. However, he will already have the elusive opportunity to make some MLB history with his new club in the coming month of August. The painful part of it is the fact that he could hit the record books if he is in the lineup for the Red Sox when they play against the Blue Jays on August 26.
How is that possible? Well, back on June 26 when the Jays were playing the Red Sox in the rubber match of a three-game series at Fenway Park, the game was suspended rather than postponed due to rain. In the match, Jansen was the starting catcher for the Jays as they played through the first inning before ultimately halting the game in the top half of the second inning.
In August, the Jays and Red Sox will be resuming that suspended game from the second inning onwards in the first of two games set to take place that day. So if Boston chooses to have Jansen to be part of the lineup in the first game that day either as a starter or a reserve, he would become the first player in MLB history to ever appear in a single game for both teams. Wouldn't that be something?
Perhaps someone might try to unearth an abstract rule hidden within the MLB rule books to not allow it to happen. But assuming there isn’t a clearly defined one under the official major league rules, look for the Red Sox to ensure that history will take place on that very day.
In the case for the Blue Jays, normally it should be a feat still worth celebrating since part of it needed to be registered when Jansen was still a part of the team. But now that he is a member of their arch rivals Red Sox, Blue Jays fans can just prepare for the most Jays thing that will likely happen instead. That would be Jansen having a field day against the Jays on August 26 while entering the record books as a Red Sox at the same time.
