Blue Jays provide vague and unhelpful injury updates on Bo Bichette and Jordan Romano

Will we see Bo and Ro again before the end of the season?

Following weeks of ambiguity since landing on the IL, the Toronto Blue Jays finally gave injury updates for two of their main stars, courtesy of Jays’ manager John Schneider. However, it might not be the update that everyone had been waiting for.

When Schneider was asked about whether there was enough time for Jays’ shortstop Bo Bichette to get back into action prior to the end of the 2024 season, he stated “there should be”. As for Jays’ closer Jordan Romano, Schneider vaguely hinted that they “would love for him to be back and pitch”.

Both injury updates were sure unhelpful, as they did not provide any information with regards to how their recovery progress was coming along and the approximate timeline before their return. However, with the Jays just playing out a lost season, it makes no sense to rush either of them back to risk any further potential injury that could become more long-term.

For Bichette, he was amidst his worst MLB season ever prior to being sidelined with his most recent calf injury. In 79 games, he batted an uncharacteristic .223 with a .597 OPS, along with just 29 runs scored, 4 home runs, 30 RBI and 5 stolen bases. It even got to the point where rumors were swirling that Bichette would have been on the trade block if he didn’t suffer the injury prior to the trade deadline. Nevertheless, homegrown superstars like Bichette don’t come often, so if the Jays can manage to work something out to benefit both sides, that would be the ideal resolution.

As for Romano, he too endured in what has turned out to be his worst season since his rookie year back in 2019. Prior to being sidelined with his current elbow injury, he went 1-2 with a gaudy 6.59 ERA, 1.46 WHIP, giving up 16 hits including 4 home runs, along with 4 walks and 13 strikeouts in just 13.2 innings pitched over 15 appearances. Romano, on the other hand, still appears to be in the long-term plans of the Jays.
