Former Toronto Blue Jays reliever Tim Mayza had some trouble maintaining an MLB gig for a few years prior to 2026. After establishing himself as a reliable part of the bullpen between 2018 and 2023, things fell apart for the lefty in 2024.

But after a huge bounce back campaign in 2026 with the Philadelphia Phillies, he has earned another shot with the NL East club. The Phillies re-signed Mayza to a one-year deal worth $2.75-million.

This past year, the 34-year-old veteran posted a 3-4 record with a solid 3.48 ERA and 1.13 WHIP, with 18 walks and 64 strikeouts in 67.1 innings pitched over 60 relief appearances. His manager Don Mattingly also used him as an opener six times during the past season.

Tim Mayza continues to earn a chance to reinvigorate his career after leaving the Blue Jays

It wasn’t too long ago when Mayza appeared to be a mainstay for the Blue Jays relief corps. His stellar 2023 campaign with Toronto was one of the highlight's of his run with the Blue Jays. That season, he compiled a 3-1 record with a career-best 1.52 ERA and 1.22 WHIP, giving up just nine earned runs all year to go along with 53 strikeouts in 53.1 total innings. He also pitched in a career-high 69 games that season, keeping opponents to a .250 batting average against.

However, he followed that up with a disastrous 2024 season in which he posted an ERA over 8.00 and a WHIP close to 2.00. That ultimately led to the Blue Jays designated him for assignment halfway through the season.

From there, Mayza would make stops with the New York Yankees and Pittsburgh Pirates before getting his chance with the Phillies towards the end of the 2025 season. Despite posting a 4.91 ERA and 1.64 WHIP with seven strikeouts in 7.1 innings of work over eight relief appearances, he earned a contract for the 2026 season.

With Mattingly rehired as the team's manager and Mayza back in the bullpen, the Phillies have a couple of former Blue Jays to watch in 2027. After a quick exit from the postseason this will likely be one of many moves the Phillies make to reestablish themselves as a playoff contender.
