MLB’s list of hottest offensive prospects makes Blue Jays’ September need even more obvious

With the September call-ups on the horizon, the Toronto Blue Jays need to decide carefully on which two players they would want to include for their stretch run. That is because with the Blue Jays’ recent surge, they have legitimately gotten themselves back into playoff contention. So any additions that could contribute significantly in the final month of the season could be the difference between the club making the postseason or heading home for the winter.

One of those call-up candidates should be a no-brainer for Toronto. With the MLB coming out with the list of the hottest hitting prospects this past week, it is obvious that the Blue Jays should include Sean Keys as one of the players to earn the promotion.

As Sam Dykstra and Jonathan Mayo of MLB.com had pointed out, Keys has drastically turned things around back down in the minors following his major league stint with the Blue Jays. Despite struggling initially to a .133 average with 10 strikeouts in his first nine games back with the Blue Jays’ Triple-A affiliate Buffalo Bisons, the 23-year-old prospect has since rediscovered his dominant offensive form from earlier this year.

Sean Keys deserves another shot with the Blue Jays this year with recent torrid streak

For the month of August, Keys has compiled an impressive .352/.464/.648 slash line with a 1.113 OPS. He's put together 20 runs scored, five doubles, two triples, six home runs and 23 RBIs in just 24 games played with the Bisons.

More significantly, as Dykstra and Mayo highlighted, he was able to cut his whiff rate down to close to 22% for the month of August, showing signs of maturity at the plate in the process.

In addition, the Blue Jays have even had Keys taking reps in left field in recent weeks, despite being mainly an infielder throughout his professional baseball career. So perhaps Toronto is already planning ahead on where to fit him in if he does gets the call.

For the year, Keys is now batting a strong .292 with a 1.007 OPS, along with 75 runs scored, 19 doubles, 27 home runs and 78 RBIs in 99 total minor league games. With the Blue Jays boasting an inconsistent offensive attack throughout their 2026 MLB campaign, a power-hitting and hot prospect such as Keys could instantly bolster the team production in the final few weeks of the season.

Especially with Kazuma Okamoto being the only Blue Jay currently with more than 20 home runs with 28, as the next best is George Springer at 14, the 23-year-old rookie could provide a significant boost in that category for Toronto down the stretch.
