3 Blue Jays who are on the short list for a September call-up

Toronto has some promising young pieces that could bolster their roster come September.

MLB rosters will expand in just over a week. While it’s not the same as it used to be, there is still some value to bringing up a couple of players for a September push. Roster only expand by two players now, moving the active roster from 26 to 28 players.

For the Toronto Blue Jays, that means they will be able to add a couple of key pieces to their roster as they head into the stretch run. The Blue Jays will hope that the additions could significantly help them in their quest for a playoff spot when all is said and done.

While there are several deserving Blue Jays’ players currently down on the farm, it feels like these three have stood out with their performances to date.

Two of these three Blue Jays’ prospects could earn a promotion and provide an impact in Toronto’s stretch run in September

UTIL Jay Harry

As one of the breakout prospects in Toronto’s minor league system this season, Jay Harry has continued to be successful at the Triple-A level with the Buffalo Bisons. He began the year by posting a strong .325/.354/.580 slash line with an OPS of .934 along with 11 doubles, four triples, eight home runs and 39 RBIs in 48 games with the Double-A New Hampshire. Harry has held his own with a .316 batting average, .900 OPS, with 21 runs scored, 13 doubles, five home runs and 29 RBIs in 32 games of action with the Bisons.

Those types of numbers could help bolster the Toronto offense as they finish out the final month of the regular season. In addition, he’s gotten reps in all three outfield positions, along with second base and shortstop this season. That would give massive lineup flexibility for Blue Jays manager John Schneider in how to deploy the 24-year-old prospect.

OF Yohendrick Pinango

Yohendrick Pinango had asolid run earlier this season with the Blue Jays big league club. However, when his production tailed off a bit, Pinango was sent back down to Triple-A Buffalo and hasn’t been back up since the trade deadline. Nevertheless, the 24-year-old outfielder is doing all that he can to give himself another potential opportunity with Toronto before the season is over.

Since the beginning of August, Pinango has amassed a solid .279 average, .748 OPS, along with eight runs scored, two doubles, two home runs and nine RBIs in 15 games with the Bisons. If electric rookie Brett Bateman or veteran Daz Cameron were to falter a bit in the coming week, look for Pinango to get the call to serve as valuable outfield depth.

INF Sean Keys

Finally, we have perhaps one of the most potent bats currently in the Blue Jays’ farm in Sean Keys. For the year, Keys has already accumulated 18 doubles, 27 home runs and 73 RBIs in 93 minor league games played. He also had a 12-game cameo in the majors after debuting with the Jays earlier in the year in which he recorded his first big league home run. However, he followed that up with some struggles at the plate, which ultimately landed him back in the minors.

However, Keys appeared to have regained his stroke after returning to Buffalo. In particular for the month of August, the 23-year-old slugger has registered a .338 average, 1.150 OPS, with 15 runs scored, four doubles, six home runs and 18 RBIs in 18 games. Keys could serve as a perfect platoon with George Springer in the designated hitter role with the Blue Jays in their hunt for the postseason.
