The Toronto Blue Jays are going to be a team to watch incredibly closely between now and the 2026 MLB Trade Deadline. With how this season has gone for the Blue Jays so far, it is clear that they should be looking to bolster their roster.
The injury bug has bitten the Blue Jays often this season, and it is a major reason why they currently have a 37-39 record (On Jun. 19). While they are currently under .500, they are still very much in the playoff race, as they hold the final wild card spot in the American League.
If the Blue Jays hope to climb up the standings, they should be looking to make some additions to their roster ahead of the deadline. In a recent article for The Athletic, Ken Rosenthal argued that the Blue Jays should look to add a "high-contact average hitter" and/or a "right-handed hitting outfielder."
Rosenthal then specifically mentioned San Francisco Giants infielder Luis Arraez as a possible trade target for the Blue Jays. The 29-year-old would have the potential to be a strong addition to the Blue Jays' roster, as he is one of baseball's top contact hitters.
Arraez is certainly impressing this season, as he has an impressive .326 batting average in 71 games for the Giants this season. He is also a two-time Silver Slugger and three-time batting champion. With this, he would undoubtedly give the Blue Jays another hitter who gets on base often if acquired.
Rosenthal did not mention a specific right-handed hitting outfielder for the Blue Jays to pursue. Two trade candidates who fit that description include Jo Adell and Taylor Ward. They also have a dream target in Byron Buxton, but he has a no-trade clause and recently made it clear that he wants to stay a Twin.
Adell is currently with the Angels and is hitting .249/.292/.391 with 10 home runs in 76 games played. Ward is batting .253/.394/.347 with three home runs in 75 games played with the Orioles.
These are not the only trade needs the Blue Jays should look to address
While it would make a lot of sense for the Blue Jays to bring in another contact hitter and/or outfielder, it is clear that they also need to improve their pitching. They could use at least one more starting pitcher to boost their rotation. It also would not hurt for them to add another reliever to their bullpen.
The MLB trade market has several notable starters on it, including Tarik Skubal, Freddy Peralta, Sandy Alcantara, Joe Ryan, Sonny Gray, and Jose Soriano. When it comes to relievers, Boston Red Sox closer Aroldis Chapman would be the big prize for Toronto if acquired.
It will be interesting to see what kind of moves the Blue Jays make ahead of the deadline. It could be a busy summer in Toronto.
