After missing these last few months, Anthony Santander has been looking like a failed signing from last offseason. He got off to a really bad start before hitting the injured list with shoulder inflammation. His production on the field was obvioulsy not cutting his big contract, but now all of a sudden it hurts harder now that he is limiting the Blue Jays' draft plans.
Unexpectedly, signing Santander took Toronto out of the second round for draft class. For a guy with a 63 wRC+, losing a second round pick from the signing really hurts. There are a variety of reasons as to why this hurts.
The Anthony Santander signing is hurting the Blue Jays' MLB Draft plans.
First of all, the second round is loaded this year with, obvioulsy depending on how much the first round signing bonuses are. Toronto could have strategically went underslot first round, to then land one of the better mid 30-40 selections with that saved money. College bats like Andrew Fischer and Devin Taylor may drop out of the first round, which would still be extremely productive selections in the second round with an underslot, but this signing took them away from that.
Additionally, adding more depth to the farm system with a high upside selection in that round would make it so much easier to deal from at the MLB Trade Deadline. Adding more players to the farm system would make more players expendable to acquire great big league talent to boost the playoff chances.
Lastly, Toronto may not even reach their bonus pool space by missing out on a top of the line prospect. The second round can be high signing bonuses too and if the Blue Jays cannot spend the money they have here, then it's a complete waste.
This farm system has gotten deeper and deeper over the years and they have some excellent prospects already. For a team with a solid big league roster, having a great farm system to go with that would maintain this success long term. This organization is going to lose some talent at the trade deadline, so this draft would have been perfect to build it up more. They still can, but without the second round pick it will be much harder.
