During the 2025 MLB trade deadline, the Toronto Blue Jays were among some of the most active teams involved. They recruited four key pieces for their current roster by adding former Cy Young winner Shane Bieber to bolster the rotation, along with Seranthony Domínguez and Louis Varland to stabilize the bullpen, and a power bat in Ty France to beef up the offense. Just for good measure, the Jays also dealt for some catching depth in Brandon Valenzuela.
However, it wasn’t just the new Blue Jays that were busy moving from one team to another, as many former Jays apparently were hot commodities at the trade deadline as well. As a result, let’s take a look at every former Blue Jays players that ended up on a new team as a fallout of the deadline.
Every former Blue Jays players who were traded at the 2025 MLB trade deadline
P Brock Stewart (traded by the Minnesota Twins to the Los Angeles Dodgers for OF James Outman)
Most Blue Jays fans likely don’t remember right-handed pitcher Brock Stewart during his time with Toronto. That is because Stewart was a waiver claim by Toronto off of the NL West juggernaut Los Angeles Dodgers at the trade deadline back in 2019 amidst the Jays rebuilding years. The former sixth-round pick from the 2014 MLB Draft appeared in 10 games for Toronto in his lone year with the club, posting four wins despite a dismal 8.31 ERA and 1.57 WHIP.
However, Stewart has finally found his footing in the league after joining the Minnesota Twins organization in 2023. This season, the 33-year-old veteran has compiled a stellar 2.38 ERA, 1.09 WHIP, along with 41 strikeouts in just 34 innings pitched over 39 relief appearances. With that performance, it was enough to entice the Dodgers to bring him back for a second go-around with the team in exchange for outfielder James Outman to become a part of their bullpen mob heading into the stretch run.
P Steven Matz (traded by the St. Louis Cardinals to the Boston Red Sox in exchange for INF Blaze Jordan)
Since putting together his career-high 14-win season with the Jays back in 2021, veteran pitcher Steven Matz has had his ups and downs as a swingman for the St. Louis Cardinals during the past four seasons. In total, Matz has amassed a 15-14 record with a 4.24 ERA, 1.30 WHIP, with 232 strikeouts in 252 1/3 innings of work with the Cardinals since 2022.
This season, the 34-year-old lefty has had a strong campaign primarily as a reliever for St. Louis, registering a 5-2 record with a 3.44 ERA and 1.18 WHIP, while limiting the opposition to only four home runs all year over 55 innings pitched. That certainly caught the eye of the Boston Red Sox, as they have now brought Matz back to the AL East as a foe of the Blue Jays. However, Red Sox fans ddint appear too happy to see that they had to give up their No. 17 prospect Blaze Jordan to get the deal done.
OF Randal Grichuk (traded by the Arizona Diamondbacks to the Kansas City Royals in exchange for P Andrew Hoffmann)
As one of the Jays former fan favourites, Randal Grichuk has certainly travelled many miles after departing the organization following the 2021 MLB season. With stops in Colorado (Rockies), Los Angeles (Angels), Arizona (Diamondbacks) and now Kansas City (Royals), Grichuk joins his fourth organization in four years as he heads toward the latter parts of his career. For the Royals, they only had to give up pitcher Andrew Hoffmann to get their key outfield piece.

The 12-year veteran was coming off a strong 2024 campaign in which he posted a personal best .291 batting average, along with 12 home runs and 46 RBIs in 106 games as a part-time player for the Diamondbacks. This year with Arizona, Grichuk has maintained solid numbers, compiling a slash line of .240/.277/.457/.734 with seven home runs and 22 RBIs in 70 games of action.
He has already connected for his first home run since joining the Royals at the trade deadline. Grichuk will hope to help the club in whatever playoff aspirations they have left as they desperately battle for the final Wild Card spot down the stretch.
C Danny Jansen (traded by the Tampa Bay Rays to the Milwaukee Brewers in exchange for INF Jadher Areinamo)
Finally, we have another former Jays fan favourite in Danny Jansen. In hindsight now, after seeing both Alejandro Kirk and Tyler Heineman going down to head injuries in the past couple of weeks, Toronto should have really considered a reunion with Jansen to strengthen their catching position heading into their playoff run. However, Jansen is now the property of the Milwaukee Brewers, with minor league prospect Jadher Areinamo as the return going back the Tampa Bay Rays way.
Jansen has actually struggled with the Rays this season, amassing a less-than-stellar .204 average and .703 OPS. However, at least his power still remained, with 11 home runs and 29 RBIs in 73 total games played with Tampa Bay. By joining the surging Brewers, who are now the top team in the entire MLB, Jansen will have the opportunity to return to the postseason once again in 2025 with a legitimate contender.
