Do the Blue Jays in 2025 feel like the 2007 Mets

2007 should have been the Mets year, but a late collapse derailed their World Series hopes - are the Blue Jays headed down a similar path?

From a 26-28 record on May 28, to leading the AL East Division in early September, the 2025 season has been a roller coaster the Toronto Blue Jays. And that ride is continuing as their division lead has gotten smaller over the last few weeks. With the New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox starting to win along with the Blue Jays losing, the 2025 Blue Jays are hoping not to replicate the same season as the 2007 New York Mets.

How 2025 Blue Jays could become 2007 Mets

The 2007 Mets collapse is one of the worst in sports history. At one point in September, the Mets had a seven-game lead on the Philadelphia Phillies for the NL East Division. Then, the Mets lost 12 of their last 17 games and the Phillies got hot to win the division on the final day of the 2007 season and the Mets would watch the 2007 postseason from home.

The Blue Jays took the AL East Division lead on July 3 after a four-game series sweep of the Yankees at Rogers Centre. From that point on, the Blue Jays have held the division lead ever since. At one point that lead was at 6.5 games, but entering Wednesdays action the Blue Jays' lead for the division was down to just 2.5 over both the Yankees and Red Sox. Both the Yankees and Red Sox have gotten hot over the last two-to-three weeks, while the Blue Jays have recently lost three of their last five games; maybe there's reason to be concerned about a collapse.

One thing that may work in the Blue Jays favor though, is they get to face both the Yankees and Red Sox three times each this month. This weekend, the Blue Jays play at Yankee Stadium and that series has the potential to decide the AL East division - it also has the potential to settle nothing at all with these teams destined to fight to the very end.

Meantime, in late-September, the Blue Jays host the Red Sox for three games. in the second last series of the regular season. The Blue Jays are already 7-3 against Boston this year and the Red Sox will be more motivated than ever to steal some games back from their division rivals.

The AL's third Wild Card seed, the Seattle Mariners, are also a team to keep an eye on. If the Blue Jays fall out of contention for a division spot, they would have to be worried about the Mariners jumping ahead of Toronto in the standings.

While the 2025 Blue Jays have more of an opportunity to get into the postseason than the 2007 Mets did, a collapse is still possible and should they miss the playoffs they would conted with that early 2000's team for the biggest regular season collapses this century.
