When April concluded for the 2025 Toronto Blue Jays, the ball club was struggling with a 14-16 record. Then in May, the Blue Jays slowly were turning their season around with a 30-28 record heading into June. That is when the Blue Jays started to pull things together winning a series six times, highlighted by a sweep against the St. Louis Cardinals. The Blue Jays headed into July with a 46-38 record after a win against the New York Yankees.

The Blue Jays continued their important series against the Yankees for three more games to start a pivotal July. However, even while playing solid baseball, one person is still not buying into the Blue Jays.

New York's broadcaster Kay says Toronto isn't a "first place team"

Michael Kay has been the Yankees play-by-play broadcaster on YES Network for decades. At 64 years old, Kay has been around baseball for a long time and has seen plenty of really good teams. However, Kay took a shot at the Blue Jays during Toronto's recent series against the Yankees on Wednesday saying, "The Blue Jays are not a first place team, I'm sorry."

An area Kay was ready to rip the Blue Jays was on their run differential. Heading into Friday night's game, the Blue Jays had a +6 run differential to the Yankees' +103. In the end, the Blue Jays' 8-5 win capped off a four-game series sweep and the team has a one game lead on the Yankees for the division lead.

The Blue Jays now have a 49-38 overall record. The series win was highlighted by George Springer's dominating series with four home runs and 11 runs batted in. Springer, Nathan Lukes and Addison Barger each had three hits in last night's win.

Kay said that with the run differential the Blue Jays had, they "should be a .500 team." However, heating up at this time is what the Blue Jays needed after their early season struggles. The Blue Jays showed potential of being a first place team earning a one-run win in the first game against the Yankees. The Blue Jays won big, 12-5, on Canada Day and hung on for an 11-9 win on Wednesday after coughing up an 8-0 lead.

"They're not playing great baseball," Kay said about the Blue Jays. "I'm sorry, they're not." Whether Kay thinks the Blue Jays are a first place team or not, the team is in the race for the AL East Division title in 2025 thanks to a solid June and sweeping the series against the Yankees to start July.

The Blue Jays are also in a good position to keep building on this momentum with their next few opponents all having less than stellar seasons; the Los Angeles Angels, Chicago White Sox and Athletics on the schedule next. The Angels are the only team .500 or better.
