The Toronto Blue Jays' front office was quite active this past offseason as they worked hard to significantly bolster their roster heading into the 2026 season. Among the rumored moves included their involved interest in acquiring star infielder Ketel Marte from the Arizona Diamondbacks as the potential prime replacement for the departed Bo Bichette in their lineup.

However, after what has transpired this week between Marte and the Diamondbacks, perhaps the Blue Jays dodged a huge bullet in failing to acquire the 32-year-old infielder. Marte was placed on the restricted list by Arizona after failing to show up for their game against the Boston Red Sox on Monday (Aug. 17). According to Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo, Marte is dealing with a “personal issue”, but one that Arizona is still trying to figure out, as per the Toronto Sun.

On Tuesday, the Diamondbacks tried to provide some clarity. According to Steve Gilbert of MLB.com, Marte was heading back to Phoenix to have an MRI done on his knee,

However, it was unclear where and when Marte had suffered the injury in recent days. Lovullo also further elaborated that they haven’t spoken to each other since Monday and the decision to have the MRI done back in Arizona instead of Boston was “the player’s choice”, as per Sportsnet.

Blue Jays would've loved Ketel Marte's on field production, but the off field distractions aren't worth it

The Blue Jays have had their troubles generating offense this season. As a result, someone like Marte, who is capable of 20+ home runs and 70+ RBIs per season, would have provided a huge boost to the lineup had they successfully acquired him. So far this year, Marte has compiled a .249 average, .760 OPS, along with 65 runs scored, 21 home runs and 67 RBIs in 118 games played with Arizona.

However, if acquiring the star infielder involves dealing with the extra baggage the Blue Jays should be better off without him. This isn't the first time Marte has skipped out on the team. He landed on the restricted list last July after missing a series after the All-Star break, returning to the Dominican Republic following a home burglary. Numerous personal items and jewelry were stolen, but no one was at the home when the burglary occurred.

The Blue Jays are a team that has been successfully built around camaraderie and team chemistry that is being carried over from last season. Even though they are missing some key pieces that helped build that culture, this group still seems to enjoy being around each other and are having fun again with this late season surge.

The last thing that they need is distractions that could impact their focus on the game. As the saying goes, sometimes the best trades are the ones that you don’t make.
