The Toronto Blue Jays should be looking to add to their roster between now and the 2026 MLB Trade Deadline. Due to their significant injury trouble this season, the Blue Jays are currently third in the American League East with a 23-27 record (going into Friday, May 22).
While the Blue Jays currently have a losing record, their playoff hopes are far from gone. The Blue Jays are currently 1.5 games behind the Texas Rangers for the final wild card spot in the American League. With this, one long winning streak could help Toronto get back to holding a playoff spot.
With a playoff push being the goal for the Blue Jays, they are once again being connected to one of their trade targets from this past offseason.
In a recent article for Bleacher Report, Zachary D. Rymer predicted that the Blue Jays would strike a deal for Arizona Diamondbacks star infielder Ketel Marte this season. Rymer writes, "He should be on the Blue Jays' radar, as they need more pop arguably just as much as they need starting pitching. He should also appeal to the Boston Red Sox, especially if Marcelo Mayer's future is back at shortstop. Both clubs were linked to Marte over the winter. Prediction: Traded to Blue Jays."
With the Blue Jays needing another high-impact infielder on their roster, it would not be surprising in the slightest if they made a push for Marte again ahead of the trade deadline. It is already known that they like the player, and he would be more than a rental for the Blue Jays if they acquired him. This is because he is in just the second season of his six-year, $116.5 million contract. This undoubtedly adds to his appeal.
Blue Jays would gain another star if they swung deal for Marte
Marte has had a bit of a quiet start to the season for his standards. In 46 games, he has seven home runs, 46 RBI, and a .240 batting average. Yet, when looking at his excellent resume, there is no question that he is a star when playing at his best.
Just last season with Arizona, Marte had 28 home runs, 72 RBI, and a .283 batting average in 126 games. This is after the two-time All-Star set career highs with 36 home runs and 95 RBI during the 2024 season with the Diamondbacks. With numbers like these, he would have the potential to provide the Blue Jays' roster with a significant boost if acquired.
Overall, with the Blue Jays fighting for their playoff lives, Marte is exactly the kind of star player that they should be looking to acquire. It will be interesting to see if they can successfully land him from Arizona this season.
