Daulton Varsho is nearing his return to the Blue Jays' roster, and it couldn't come at a better time.
The Blue Jays are currently mired in a five-game losing streak where their offense has gone stone cold, so Varsho's presence in the batter's box could serve as a boon for a team starving for offense production.
Daulton Varsho hints at breakout season upon return to Blue Jays' roster
While we've yet to see Varsho put it all together on offense during his time with the Blue Jays, he seems prepared to break out this season based off what he said in a recent interview withHerd Chronicles.
“It feels like I’m a baseball player again,” Varsho said. “It’s one of those things where you go through the rehab process – it’s the first time for me really going through it. It’s just really tough because you kind of come here and you’re like alright, now I’m a baseball player again. You’re doing normal things, you’re taking BP, you’re with the team, so it’s honestly really fun for me to just be myself again.”
Varsho belted four home runs in just 12 games in spring training, but opened the season on the injured list due to his offseason shoulder surgery.
While Varsho was able to swing the bat in spring training (and swing it well), he still wasn't where he needed to be in the field.
The gold standard for Varsho on offense is his 2022 when he belted 27 home runs in his last season with the Arizona Diamondbacks. Varsho's mashed 38 home runs across 294 games in his Blue Jays tenure, but seems poised for a strong season now that he's fully healthy.

Varsho has made some noteworthy adjustments, and seems to a bit of a more upright stance, which seems to have led to improved bat speed and a more powerful swing. With a tweaked approach at the plate hitting pitches in the middle of the plate versus chasing pitches outside the zone.
Varsho's rehab assignment is coming to an end, so there's probably a good chance we see him in a Blue Jays uniform at some point over the next week.
Varsho' has a great mix of power and speed, and he'd serve as the perfect table-setter for the Blue Jays' offense.
He'll also add to the Blue Jays' success against left-handed pitching, as he's a career .260 hitter against leftys. The Blue Jays are hitting .277 against leftys as a team, which is third in baseball.
His defense is also a luxury. He won the Gold Glove in center field in the American League last season along with winning the Platinum League. He also led baseball in DRS (Defensive Runs Saved) in 2023 (29) and 2024 (28).
While he likely won't finish as the leader for a third year in a row after missing some time with his injury, he's joining the Blue Jays at the perfect time. Not only is he due for a rebound season, but he's also able to provide some much-needed stability in the field and at the plate.
And, according to his newest comments, he seems ready to take both things head on.
