Cincinnati Reds may have just gifted the Blue Jays a game changer

It is no secret that the Toronto Blue Jays could use another power hitter in their lineup as they fight for a wild-card spot in the American League. Now, they have a fascinating option to consider on the waiver wire.

The Athletic's Ken Rosenthal reported late Wednesday night that the Reds placed slugger Eugenio Suárez on waivers. The Reds also placed outfielder TJ Friedl on waivers, but Suarez is the player whom the Blue Jays would be wise to consider taking a gamble on.

Suárez's reunion with the Reds this season did not go the way either side would have liked, hence why he was placed on waivers. In 103 games with the National League Central club this campaign before being waived, he posted 19 home runs, 57 RBI, and a .208 batting average. However, he at least ended his second stint with the Reds with a bang, hitting a grand slam in the ninth inning in his most recent appearance against the San Francisco Giants.

When looking at Suárez's resume, he is precisely the kind of power hitter who the Blue Jays should take a chance on as they push for the playoffs. Just last season, he recorded 49 home runs, 118 RBI, and a .228 batting average in 159 games split between the Arizona Diamondbacks and Seattle Mariners. He has also hit at least 30 home runs in six out of his 13 MLB seasons, so he would give Toronto another real power threat in their lineup if they brought him in.

If the Blue Jays claimed Suárez off waivers, he would offer them another solid option for their DH spot. He could also take reps at third base when needed, so he would offer the Blue Jays some versatility as well.

This would likely mean less at-bats for guys like George Springer and Jésus Sánchez, but the two of them combined have one home run more than Suárez has all by himself.

Blue Jays bringing in Eugenio Suárez would be a low-risk, high-reward move

With Suárez being placed on waivers, the Blue Jays do not need to give up anything to bring him in. Due to this, Toronto claiming him would be an intriguing low-risk, high-reward move.

If Suárez regained his 2025 form with the Blue Jays, he would give their offense a significant boost, and claiming him would look like a genius move. Yet, even if he produced as he did during this season with the Reds, he could still be a solid pickup for a Blue Jays club that needs more offense.

This is barely a gamble on Toronto's part. The Reds are giving them an opportunity to legitimately upgrade their offense with the kind of player they have been missing all season. A power hitter, who has the ability to change the ball game with one swing of the bat.
