Blue Jays’ playoff push needs Ernie Clement to revive his fading Silver Slugger momentum

The Toronto Blue Jays have spent the last several weeks turning what looked like a lost season into a far more interesting finish than anyone could have likely imagined. After slogging through an uneven first half, they have pushed their way back into the American League playoff picture, survived a difficult August stretch, and given themselves a legitimate path to a Wild Card spot with a more manageable schedule ahead.

At this point in the year, the Blue Jays are just looking for timely production from anywhere and everywhere. They need the players who helped keep them afloat earlier in the season to continue to push over the final few weeks. When it comes to Ernie Clement, his second half is looking nothing like his first half and that's very inconvenient for the Blue Jays. For a guy that was likely in the Silver Slugger conversation among American League second basemen, his Silver Slugger case may be fading just when the Blue Jays need him the most.

Earlier this season Clement was having a career year for the Blue Jays. He was one of the clearest offensive standouts at second base in the AL. His first half earned him not only his first All-Star nod, but he garnered the most votes in the AL, and was named a starter for the Midsummer classic. It also made him one of the more compelling Silver Slugger candidates at the position.

In 93 first-half games, Clement hit .296/.318/.433 with a .751 OPS, a 109 wRC+, a .308 BABIP and a strikeout rate of just 9.4 percent, according to the FanGraphs splits noted above. He also had eight home runs, while still putting the ball in play and forcing the defense to make plays.

That version of Clement has not been present in the second half. Over 35 games since the break, Clement has fallen to last among 14 qualified American League second basemen in wRC+ of 68. He's sitting 12th in on-base percentage at .284. The bat-to-ball skills are still there, as his 9.9 percent strikeout rate remains excellent, but the quality and results have dipped. His BABIP has fallen to .269, and after hitting eight home runs before the break, he has gone deep just once in the second half.

The Blue Jays’ recent playoff push needs to be propelled by timely and consistent hitting. Their pitching and defense have helped drive the surge, while the lineup has had stretches where it has still left something to be desired. Toronto has made the race interesting again, but the final stretch will test whether this group can do enough little things to actually finish the job.

If the Blue Jays are going to turn a favourable-looking schedule into actual wins, they need more than a few big names to wake up. It would be great if Vladimir Guerrero Jr. could come to life in the final few weeks, maybe using Cal Raleigh's three homer game as inspiration, but they also need to see some life from Clement.

Clement is still having a strong season overall, and was already named the winner of the 2026 Heart and Hustle award. A .284/.309/.402 slash line at second base keeps him in the larger conversation for the Silver Slugger, especially when paired with his versatility, contact skills and importance to the Blue Jays’ everyday mix. But Silver Slugger voting can often be shaped by how a team finishes, and right now other American League second basemen are making louder offensive cases with more power and stronger second-half production.

The final few weeks may decide whether Clement's first half is remembered as the foundation of an award-worthy season or as the high point of a campaign that lost momentum at the wrong time. For the Blue Jays, they just need Clement to look more like the hitter who helped stabilize the lineup before the All-Star break. If he can do that, the Silver Slugger conversation will take care of itself.
