Now that we are into the All-Star Break, the Toronto Blue Jays are preparing to make some big splashes at the MLB Trade Deadline. Ross Atkins wants to go all in this year and he needs to back up his words with some major trades. That seems to be coming to life as Bob Nightengale of USA Today recently reported that Toronto had shown interest in Zac Gallen, one of the top arms on the market.
"GMs believe that the Toronto Blue Jays could be as aggressive as any team in baseball at the deadline, believing this could be their best chance to return to the World Series since 1993," stated Nightengale in his article. "The Blue Jays are looking for a front-line pitcher, and have shown interest in Gallen."
Blue Jays reported interest in Zac Gallen could be the missing piece towards a World Series run.
Despite the season numbers, Gallen might be the best arm that has been linked to the Blue Jays. Gallen has generated a 5.40 ERA with a 4.79 FIP and a 8.61 K/9 this season. His problem this season has been allowing too many barrels at a high 11.8% and a huge hard-hit rate of 46.7%. Before this season though, his ERA has been below four by a good chunk. He has consistenly been an above average pitcher in baseball, but has fallen into a slump this season.
Arizona is also in a tough spot for the postseason, sitting 2.5 games back of a wild card spot. It is not confirmed that the Diamondbacks will sell off their big pieces at the deadline. Nonetheless, they are definitely exploring their options with about two weeks to go until the big sale and that can be exactly where Toronto finds their missing piece.
The package for Gallen may not be too pricey either, especially since they would be buying low on him. Joey Loperfido would likely be apart of the package as he could help improve their depth in the outfield as Jake McCarthy has not been great this season. Additionally, a big league ready arm such as Paxton Schultz could also be a valubale addition in a deal like this. To round it out, a lower ranked prospect in the bottom of the organization could also help complete the deal like Sam Shaw.
Toronto needs to find that missing piece to the rotation and it is very clear that they are trying. Gallen would be a very solid upgrade, so hopefully Atkins can work out a deal.
