The Toronto Blue Jays missed out on Juan Soto, and everyone was curious where they'd turn next. While names like Anthony Santander and Max Fried were whispered throughout the week, the Blue Jays pulled a fast one on everybody and turned to Cleveland Guardians second baseman Andrés Giménez.

The Blue Jays nabbed the three-time Gold Glove Award winner, who will presumably line up alongside Bo Bichette and Vladimir Guerrero Jr. in Toronto's infield. This move will upgrade the Blue Jays' already stellar defense. Toronto was tops in the majors last season in defensive runs saved (DRS) according to FanGraphs.

Blue Jays trade for Guardians Gold Glove Award-winner Andrés Giménez

Giménez originally came up through the New York Mets' organization and was part of the blockbuster trade a few years back that sent Francisco Lindor to Queens. Giménez is now part of another big-time trade, but the return for the Guardians is not yet known.

This is a peculiar move on the part of Toronto given that Giménez's carry tool is his glove, not his bat. For his career, the 26-year-old owns a .261/.322/.393 slash line with only 49 homers and 222 RBI. With career-OPS of .715 and 101 OPS+, Giménez isn't going to add much pop to the Jays' lineup. Giménez is under contract through 2029 with an average annual value (AAV) of just over $15 million.

The Jays have yet to address their lineup and missed out on Fried after the left-hander agreed to an eight-year pact with the New York Yankees. There are rumors that Toronto could be in pursuit of Corbin Burnes, which would bolster the rotation, but the offense is still lacking.

If adding Giménez is just one part of a bigger plan on the part of Ross Atkins and the Blue Jays' leadership, so be it. But if Toronto only walks away from the MLB Winter Meetings with a light-hitting second baseman in tow, Blue Jays fans will be none too happy.
