Last week, Toronto Blue Jays manager John Schneider told reporters that José Berrios will be undergoing surgery to repair a stress fracture in his elbow. In addition, Schneider shared that it is still not known if Berrios is done for the season. This is undoubtedly a rough update for Berrios and the Blue Jays. Toronto has missed Berrios this season, and it would be brutal if he ends up being officially ruled out for the campaign.

Repair existing injury (stress fracture on elbow).
There is some concern about ligament - they’ll determine whether he’s done for season whether ligament needs repairing.
With there being questions about Berrios' availability this campaign, the Blue Jays should be on the hunt for starting pitcher help between now and the 2026 MLB Trade Deadline. The Blue Jays need to boost their roster, as they have an underwhelming 21-26 record but are also just one game behind the Seattle Mariners for the final wild card spot in the American League.
When looking at potential pitching options for the Blue Jays, Freddy Peralta, Sonny Gray, and Joe Ryan all stand out as interesting options for the American League East club. If the Blue Jays landed a pitcher from this trio, there is no question that their pitching rotation would get a massive boost.
Mets' Peralta would be the big fish for the Blue Jays, but Gray and Ryan also stand out
Out of the three pitchers listed above, there is no question that Peralta would be the biggest addition for Toronto if acquired. The 29-year-old righty is a legitimate star and would give the Blue Jays another ace-level pitcher if successfully brought in.
With the New York Mets being at the bottom of the NL East standings and Peralta being a pending free agent, there is a chance that he could get moved. In 10 games this season with the Mets, the two-time All-Star has a 3-3 record and a 3.31 ERA. With numbers like these, he would be a nice pickup for a Blue Jays club that needs a boost.
Red Sox's Gray would give the Blue Jays a veteran pitcher who still thrives
It has been a disappointing season for the Boston Red Sox, and Gray is among their players already creating chatter as a trade candidate. If the 36-year-old is officially made available by the Red Sox, the Blue Jays would be wise to make a real push for him.

Gray is showing this season with Boston that he can still be an impactful starter pitching at this point in his career. In eight appearances with the Red Sox, the three-time All-Star has a 5-1 record, a 2.93 ERA, and 30 strikeouts.
Twins' Ryan would give the Blue Jays a star pitcher who keeps getting better
Ryan is another pitcher who the Blue Jays should strongly consider targeting this season. Questions about the 29-year-old righty's long-term future with the Minnesota Twins have come up, so he could be made available this season.
Ryan is coming off an All-Star season with the Twins, where he had a 13-10 record and a 3.42 ERA in 31 appearances. He has only continued to get better this season with Minnesota, too, as he has a 3.20 ERA in 10 starts.
The Blue Jays spent most of the winter building their pitching depth, but the injuries that have piled up have depleted that almost immediately out of the gate. While reinforcements could be available internally, the Blue Jays can't ignore some of these outside x-factors if they hope to push their way into the playoff picture sooner rather than later.
